In a fundraiser event held in the city on Sunday, visually-impaired persons directed seasoned drivers by reading out the instructions issued in Braille, so that they could reach the treasure and win the event.
A number of schemes are being implemented for the welfare and benefit of the people with disabilities by the Union and state governments. But lack of awareness has been a major hurdle in implementing the same, said participants at a programme got up by the Network of Institutions for Disabled near BHEL campus on Monday. They emphasised the role of parents and special teachers in guiding the differently-abled persons.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Social Justice Minister M K Muneer has sought the Public Service Commission’s opinion on filling the physically handicapped (PH) backlog as per the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Act 1996 and on making appointments from the existing rank lists if the reservation roster of 1,34 and 67 is to be followed on the basis of the Government of India office memorandum and the Supreme Court of India ruling in this regard.
BENGALURU: With the aim of promoting the advantages of swimming for people with disabilities, a free 10-day camp is being conducted at Sindhia Swimming Pool, Yelachananahalli, Kanakapura Road in the city. This is being organised by Astha, an NGO, and a support group ‘One Step At A Time’ in association with Karnataka Para Swimming Association. The camp, which started on March 9, will conclude on March 19.

Apart from fixing the responsibilities of the civic departments and other concerned agencies to ensure safety of pedestrians across the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) draft recommends introduction of an audio feature in traffic signals for the visually-impaired and also a buffer zone of two metres between STOP line for vehicles and zebra crossing.
