Fri, 03/03/2017 - 10:41 -- geeta.nair

The Delhi High Court on Thursday stayed the State government’s move to close down a residential school for the blind and stop the supply of basic amenities to the school hostel.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice G. Rohini was hearing a petition filed by the National Federation of Blind which had challenged the move of the government. The petitioner, advocate Santosh Rungta, said the Department of Education had compelled parents to withdraw their wards from Andh Mahavidhyalaya on Panchkuian Road and admit them in other blind schools which were running to capacity.

‘Illegal move’

The school was established over 50 years ago using donations made by the public. In 1980, following complaints about its management, the school was taken over by the Department of Education. In February, the government closed down the school without any reason, the petition stated. The move is also against the provisions of the Right to Education Act and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
