It was November 2023 when sports entered his life. Before that, Lakkshvir Rehal’s life was just a routine affair.

Visually impaired, Lakkshvir (18) was figuring out what he should do so that he could settle and earn well for his family. Lakkshvir can see from one eye. His father is an architect and mother a chocolate maker.

“I used to make v-logs on social media so that I could start earning. But then I was told by my teachers and parents that I should play games,” he said.

Born with a visual impairment, Rakshitha has overcome numerous challenges to become one of India's top Para athletes.

Rakshitha Raju, a visually impaired athlete from Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, has been selected for the Paralympics 2024 in Paris, starting from August 28, 2024. She will be competing in the Women's 1500m Running T-11 Category, making history as the first Indian female athlete to compete in this category in the Paralympic Games. This milestone is a testament to Rakshitha's unparalleled resilience and commitment to excellence.

A day after The Tribune published the report “Govt apathy forced this visually impaired cricketer to quit game” in these columns, the authorities concerned swung into action and paid a visit to Tejinder Pal Singh’s house at Guru Nanak Pura, here on Thursday, to verify his credentials and get an application signed from him.
 

Reportedly, the Sports Department has decided to release his long pending cash prize as per the Sports Policy 2018, the formalities of which have been initiated.

What is sound ball tennis you may ask? Well, it is a sport for people with visual impairments. Similar to tennis and played with a modified ball.

Sound ball tennis is played indoors using rackets and sponge balls that make sound when in motion. The rattling sound made by the balls is followed by the players. The game takes some practice and technique is such that players need to stay agile and focused on the sound the ball makes while using hand moments to hit the ball.

Arushi organised ‘The 13th Car Rally for the Blind’ here on Sunday. Dilip Suryawanshi, MD Dilip Buildcon and Sarit Kumar Choudhary from IGRMS were present as the Chief Guest and flagged off the first vehicle which was driven by Aruneshwar Singhdeo and navigator Kamal Bhamore and started the rally from DB Mall, MP Nagar, Bhopal.

Many other guests, volunteers of Arushi and staff were also present. The Rally was supported by Amway, Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, LIC, IGRMS, MP Tourism, Indian Oil Corporation and Aquarius.

Blind football tournament in Kolkata spells new hope for young talent

In the heart of Kolkata, not very far away from the sprawling Maidan, six teams got together for a one-of-a-kind tournament — the first East Zone Blind Football tournament — on Saturday.

On the sixth floor of ‘Extraatime Turf’, Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ played loudly on stereo speakers while players dribbled and referees were immersed in pre-match pep talk.
