The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, was notified, after receiving the assent of President. Article 21-A, as inserted by the Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002, provides for free and compulsory education of all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a Fundamental Right in such manner as the State may, by Law, determine. Consequently, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, was enacted by the Parliament. The Act received the assent of the President on 26th August, 2009.

The Amendment was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 24 April 2012, and the Lok Sabha on 9 May 2012. The President's assent is awaited.
