Nagpur’s Ishwari becomes first blind swimmer to cross Palk Strait

Seventeen-year-old visually impaired swimmer Ishwari Pande from Nagpur created history on Monday by becoming the world’s first completely blind swimmer to cross the Palk Strait from Sri Lanka to India.She began her record attempt at 4 am from Urmalai Point near Talaimannar in Sri Lanka and completed the journey at 3:15 pm, reaching Arichalmunai in Dhanushkodi. Ishwari covered the challenging stretch in 11 hours and 15 minutes.

Today, the 43-year-old runs a small roadside stall near Soura on Dr Ali Jan Road, selling honey, saffron and dry fruits — a business built not on sympathy, but on self-reliance.
Beside the steady hum of traffic on the road that connects two major hospitals of the city, Dar arranges bottles of honey and packets of seeds by touch. His hands move with confidence.

UPSC given a week’s time to file affidavit on software for visually impaired candidates

The apex court had on December 3, 2025, directed the UPSC to incorporate a provision allowing eligible candidates to request a change of scribe till at least seven days before the test

The Supreme Court on Monday (February 16, 2026) granted a week to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to file its compliance affidavit on the proposed plan of action, timeline, and modalities for the deployment and use of screen-reader software for visually impaired candidates in examinations conducted by the Commission.
