Payal, a single mother living in Mumbai, works for a nationalised bank where she handles mostly NRI clients as part of her job. Payal also enjoys writing about her experiences of parenting, spirituality and of course life with blindness. In this second episode of Eyeway Encounters podcast, George Abraham speaks to Payal Kapoor from Hyderabad, India. Payal was working with the famous Oberoi group when she suffered from Meningitis at the age of 22. As a result she lost her eyesight, her hearing and her sense of smell and touch. She struggled for six years until she decided to turn things around for herself. Today she is a successful blind woman doing multiple gigs. This podcast covers her life story in two parts. In the first part she cites her frustration, challenges and how she overcame them.

In this first episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks to Dr. Meghna Verma who was a practicing ophthalmologist. Midway through her professional career and life, Dr Meghna suffered sight loss due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. She was lucky to have encountered George and Eyeway at a point in her life where she was grappling with how to overcome the new challenges. She took things in her stride and managed to transform her life in a way very few can. She worked hard to reinvent herself and today she is a qualified mental health specialist.

Activists seek priority in treatment, vaccination for persons with disabilities

Department of empowerment of persons with disabilities seeks directions to states after the National Federation of the Blind complained that people with visual impairment had to stand in long queues to get tested, vaccinated and get treatment for Covid-19

Following complaints from rights activists and organisations, the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities has requested the Union health ministry to issue directions to states to give priority to people with disabilities in treatment and vaccination for Covid-19.

Puducherry: Vision impaired more vulnerable to Covid, shows study

PUDUCHERRY: People with blindness and low vision are more vulnerable to Covid-19 infection and have a disadvantage of not receiving sufficient information about the infection, a survey by Aravind Eye Hospital in Puducherry showed.

Special arrangements at Covid vaccine centres for disabled

CHENNAI: The State government on Monday informed the Madras High Court that exclusive counters will be provided for persons with disabilities (PwDs) at Covid vaccination centres across the State. Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy directed the State to take immediate steps to ensure that such counters are accessible to PwDs.

The bench passed the interim order on a PIL moved by Meenakshi Balasubramanian, a disability rights activist, seeking to add disabled persons to the priority group.
