Scientists from Trinity College Dublin have developed a new gene therapy approach that offers promise for one day treating an eye disease that leads to a progressive loss of vision and affects thousands of people across the globe.

The study, which involved a collaboration with clinical teams in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and the Mater Hospital, also has implications for a much wider suite of neurological disorders associated with ageing.

The scientists published their results in leading journal, Frontiers in Neuroscience.

Aimed at helping the visually impaired, it fits into a smartphone’s port

Four students from the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras have come together to develop a handy device for the visually impaired.

The assistive device fits into the port of a smartphone and helps them to type, learn and read braille content. It also allows them to self-navigate through space and recognise people and objects.

Will declare results by November 30: DU tells Delhi high court

New Delhi:

Delhi University on Tuesday informed the Delhi High Court that it would declare the pending results for various postgraduate and undergraduate courses by November 30, with the court remarking that the varsity’s “neck is on board” if it does not meet the deadline.

A bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Subramonium Prasad was informed by DU’s counsel Mohinder Rupal that it would declare the results after a plea alleged that varsity had not declared the results by October 31 in violation of an earlier order dated October 12.

DU assures court of PG results by November 30

NEW DELHI: Delhi University on Tuesday  assured Delhi High Court that the pending results for  various postgraduate and undergraduate courses would be  declared by November 30.

Taking note of the undertaking, the court made it clear that court made it clear that DU’s “neck is on board” if it failed to stick to the deadline.

DU’s submission came in response to an application alleging that there was violation of the court’s earlier

With over a billion people (about 15 per cent of the world’s population) having some form of disability, according to WHO, it becomes important for tech companies to create their products with accessibility features in mind. As awareness towards assistive technology (AT) is growing, major tech companies and young startups are either creating special hardware products or incorporating software features designed to address the needs of individuals with disabilities.

I almost didn’t write this piece. In fact my mind was totally blank. No ideas. Zilch. Then I wondered to myself, this column is all about voicing issues, it’s not like there’s a dearth of those. The challenge is not the lack of ideas or issues, but my brain’s selfish need to focus on personal problems.

 

Hoping Against Hope

 
22-year-old Santosh Kumar connected with the Eyeway Helpdesk after listening to our radio programme on All India Radio a few years ago. After losing his vision at seven, Santosh had to drop out of school due to lack of awareness and his family’s weak financial condition. His father, an auto rickshaw driver couldn’t afford to even consult with eye specialists for his son. But the radio series gave him hope that he too could lead a somewhat normal life.

Visually-impaired woman gets fresh appointment order

She had cleared TNPSC Group IV exams and was denied posting initially

Following repeated appeals about being denied a posting despite holding an appointment order, K. Thamarai, a visually impaired woman who had cleared the TNPSC Group IV exams received a fresh appointment order and took up posting as a junior assistant on Thursday.

“I am extremely happy that I have joined work. I was keen on becoming financially stable and helping my family. This is the first step towards that,” said Ms. Thamarai, who hails from Thiruvannamalai.
