The District Central Library in the city will soon get funding under the National Mission on Libraries, an initiative of the Union government, for improving infrastructure.
Disclosing this here on Sunday, A.P.Sivakumar, District Library Officer, said Rs. 70 lakh had been sanctioned under the programme. Of the total funding, 75% would be contributed by the Centre and the rest by the State government.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is planning to complete the distribution of supportive aids to 14,500 differently-abled schoolchildren in the district by August.
A.K. Abdul Hakkeem, district programme officer, SSA, said here on Sunday that hearing-impaired and visually-impaired children were given special attention this time. “They were broadly categorised into four groups – fully deaf and partially blind; partially deaf and fully blind; fully blind; and fully deaf,” he added.
As part of its efforts to banish all ills that can impede the State’s transition to a knowledge hub, the government has introduced a series of educational schemes for not just the backward communities but also, in a first of its kind, for students who come from economically backward families regardless of the community they belong to.
To provide a ladder to the physically-disabled students to scale great heights in life, the government proposes to start a Study Circle to train them for competitive exams and civil services.
It is a misconception that a visually impaired cannot lead another visually impaired person, said G.A. Peter Kishore, principal of Andhra Loyola College, here on Wednesday.

Ajay R Raj, a visually impaired student from Thiruvananthapuram, emerged as the all-India topper in the differently abled category of the CBSE Class XII board examinations, by scoring 98 per cent marks.
