3 December is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). On this Day WHO joined partners to celebrate "a day for all". This theme reflects a growing understanding that disability is part of the human condition. Almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life. Despite this, few countries have adequate mechanisms in place to respond fully to the needs of people with disabilities.

Covid 19 has increased the challenges manifold for blind and visually impaired people. Facing job losses, many have approached financial institutions for loans to set up small businesses. Unfortunately, they are turned down on grounds of disability.
Take the example of 25-year old Wasif Shaikh from Aurangabad, Maharashtra, who wants to start a small poultry farm. It’s been eight months since he applied for a loan from the Social Welfare Department, there has been no response.
40-year-old Gangadharappa was left jobless after he lost his vision in a road accident. The survival of his wife and two children pushed him to look for alternatives. Eyeway advised him to consider entrepreneurship as a viable economic option. He was apprised on various government aided entrepreneurship opportunities and guided to complete the loan application process.
With the sanctioned loan amount, he has now set up a grocery shop. Gangadharappa’s greatest satisfaction is that he can again provide for his family like he used to.

With over a billion people (about 15 per cent of the world’s population) having some form of disability, according to WHO, it becomes important for tech companies to create their products with accessibility features in mind. As awareness towards assistive technology (AT) is growing, major tech companies and young startups are either creating special hardware products or incorporating software features designed to address the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Blind and visually impaired people in our country struggle to find employment opportunities in both the public and private sector.
