Tuning in to home language reading needs of the blind, partially sighted

Cape Town – A new online sports radio station has joined Blind SA, the SA Braille Authority and Nal’ibali to ensure that blind and partially sighted learners will be able to read aloud in their own languages.

This comes ahead of International Mother Language Day, to be celebrated on Thursday, and 1World Sports Radio will be doing so in a unique way.
 

To make Kerala disabled-friendly

To raise voice for people with physical disabilities and to create a disabled friendly/accessible Kerala, Jyothirgamaya Foundation, an organisation working towards the empowerment of visually-challenged people, in association with Yagna Dhruva ’19, the inter-collegiate techno-cultural fest hosted by LBS Institute of Technology for Women, and Sahridhaya are conducting an accessible walk and a flash mob on Friday. The event is aimed to bring differently abled people out and shed light on their urgent need for inclusion and accessibility in all respects.

CHENNAI: On Monday at 10am, Kader Basha and his 31-year-old brother, Jankir, headed to the Chennai collectorate to submit a grievance petition to the district revenue officer. 

Everything will be fine. Don’t worry,” said Kader tightly clasping his elder brother’s hand. Jankir has learning difficulties and the two visited the office to claim his due disability pension amount.

This woman shows grit is all it takes to surmount odds

Lack of eyesight has never been a worry for me all my life, probably because I do not know what it is like to have eyesight, says S. Pavunthai, the Headmistress of Indian Association of Blind Higher Secondary School at Sundararajanpatti near Alagarkoil in Madurai. The woman, who was instrumental in starting the school, goes on rounds, teaches English, History and Economics. Speaking to Sanjana Ganesh, Ms. Pavunthai says she has little time to unwind.

“It is rare to find public, private and community radio working together, but they are doing so for this radio festival,” said UNESCO representative Al-Amin Yusuph, opening the Delhi Radio Festival on World Radio Day

WRD was proclaimed in 2011 adopted by the UN General Assembly the following year.

Explaining the idea behind WRD, Yusuph told delegates the international day aims “to strengthen interaction and cooperation amongst broadcasters and to celebrate radio as a medium.”

Thanks to technology, the range of recreational activities available for people with visual disabilities are many. Visually impaired people must look at the choices that are available and choose that suits their interests most. There are community programs as well where people can meet others socially.

In a first, Class X boards in Assam to offer paper in Braille

Guwahati: For the first time, the Class X state board exams — beginning on Thursday — will have question paper in Braille.

This time, there are 13 blind candidates appearing for the exam from five examination centres in the state. 

The general science question paper will be offered in Braille. While visually challenged candidates appearing for the boards under the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba) have to appear for all six papers, the syllabus for general science and general maths they follow are different.
