Visually impaired students of the HPU are in fix as the institute is flouting the Centre’s guideline regarding writers for such students during examinations.
There is no condition regarding the academic qualification of writers in the guidelines issued by the Centre on February 23, 2013, but the new guidelines issued on August 29, 2018, put a rider that the qualification of the writers should be one standard below that of these students.
Passed in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act has required schools to accommodate the needs of their disabled students, breaking down many barriers that prevented students from accessing educational resources, and enabling more people to enjoy the full benefits of a college education. Recruitment efforts and financial aid opportunities aimed at disabled students now exist at a number of schools.

The Disabled Students and Youth Association (DSYA) has urged the Vice Chancellor of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) to immediately withdraw “wrong and misleading” guidelines for conducting examination of visually impaired and other differently abled students who cannot write, posted on the university portal. In a letter to Prof Sikander Kumar, Mukesh Kumar and Saveena Jahan, convener and co-convener of the DSYA, said the university had violated the directions of the UGC and the Delhi High Court by implementing old guidelines without applying mind.

NEW DELHI: Recently, the JCB Literature Foundation at ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival announced an initiative to make the shortlisted entries for the JCB Prize for Literature more accessible to the visually impaired. This particular announcement was made by Mita Kapur, writer and Literary Director of the JCB Prize for Literature, during a special session, titled Literature for All: The JCB Prize Shortlist in Braille.

A 23-year-old engineering graduate C Sriram has been helping visually impaired students write exams. He created an app called "Scribe Finder Application" to help students to find volunteers who can write exams for them. The application already has more than 3,000 registered volunteers from across India.
Shalimar Paints has started an initiative to bring colours to the lives of the blind kids. To introduce the concept of #ColourALife, the brand has transformed the recovery rooms of eye hospitals by painting them with vibrant colours which gave them a view that till now would have only existed in their imaginations.
Through this digital campaign, Shalimar Paints endeavours to highlight the issue of child blindness and help the affected children by plugging the gap between the darkness and colours.
When most Class 12 students were busy on Sunday evening with their last-minute revision for the first HSC paper the next day, Naved Shaikh from Boisar was still not sure if he could write the paper.
A student of Arts, Shaikh is a visually impaired and struggled to get a writer until the very last minute.

The non-availability of ramps for children with special needs at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 45-A, became a cause of concern for the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR), a team of which visited the school today.
There are more than 10 children with special needs (CWSN) enrolled in the school. Classes for some of them are being run on the first and second floor. A school official claimed that multiple requests had been made to the UT Education Department regarding the need for a ramp in the school, but to no avail.
