On selection for the post of clerk at a nationalised bank, she was asked to produce an online disability certificate, despite having a hard copy of the same. To do this, she was asked to apply for a Unique Disability Identification (UDID) card on the Swavlamban website and provide the hospital with a printout of the form.

Audio traffic signals to guide the blind fall silent in Chennai

CHENNAI: Three years ago, in a-first-of-its-kind initiative,  the state government had installed audio signals at 150  locations in the city. The device, attached to traffic signal posts, guided the visually impaired by informing them on the signal and helped them walk without the fear of being hit by a vehicle.

A statewide study conducted in all schools for the blind revealed that the Centre’s vitamin A supplementation programme for pregnant mothers has been a success with the number of children being born blind dropping drastically as compared to the numbers when a similar study was done 15 years ago by the same organisation.

Maharashtra: Causes of visual impairment in children changing, says study

A statewide study conducted in schools for visually impaired has revealed that causes of childhood blindness are changing as society makes socio-economic progress. The study was conducted by a team from H V Desai Eye Hospital’s team, said Dr Sucheta Kulkarni, principal investigator.

The hospital will hold a meeting on February 18 to discuss the findings of the research, sources said. The findings are likely to influence government policies on eyecare funding for children, sources added.

To promote eye donation and bridge the huge gap between demand and supply of corneas, the Health Department is set to start eye collection centres in district hospitals soon.

Increasing the number of eye donations is crucial as corneal blindness can be treated only through transplantation from eye donations as there is no substitute for human tissue.

Bengaluru: Protesting blind students detained, released later

BENGALURU: About 40 visually impaired students protesting a two-year delay in distribution of free laptops by the government were detained on Tuesday morning and released in the evening. Police detained them for staging a protest without obtaining permission
