The Aam Aadmi Party has taken charge for the third time in Delhi with a decisive mandate in the recent Assembly elections. In this week’s guest column Tapas Bharadwaj, a visually impaired law student from the national capital, reflects on how issues relating to the disabled community need to better reflected in the agenda of political parties.
Abstract
The prototype Smart White Cane developed by Kyocera makes use of wireless transmission technology.
Railway operators have been placing platform doors to prevent blind and visually impaired passengers from falling onto the tracks or colliding with moving trains. But not all stations can be fitted with these doors.
From experience I can say there are many people who do not know that they can volunteer to make the life of the visually challenged better,” says Barath S N, the founder of Chennai-based Lit the Light, a group formed four years ago to help visually impaired students across Tamil Nadu. The NGO is organising the year’s first ‘Read Fest’ in temple town to sensitise more people to reading and scribing for the visually challenged.
A statewide study conducted in schools for visually impaired has revealed that causes of childhood blindness are changing as society makes socio-economic progress. The study was conducted by a team from H V Desai Eye Hospital’s team, said Dr Sucheta Kulkarni, principal investigator.
The hospital will hold a meeting on February 18 to discuss the findings of the research, sources said. The findings are likely to influence government policies on eyecare funding for children, sources added.

To promote eye donation and bridge the huge gap between demand and supply of corneas, the Health Department is set to start eye collection centres in district hospitals soon.
Increasing the number of eye donations is crucial as corneal blindness can be treated only through transplantation from eye donations as there is no substitute for human tissue.

This is one of those posts I’ve been meaning to write for a while but it has only ever existed as a forgotten idea, nestled in the list of thoughts I have on my phone, until now that is. Young people especially are often asked about what we’re doing with our lives and when I disclose my chosen path in response to the famous question, my answer is often met with replies such as ‘Ah interesting. ‘Cool.’ ‘That’s different.’ And I know that the reoccurring question will probably follow – ’So, why did you choose to study with The Open University?’
