At the risk of sounding self-aggrandising, I’d say I’m a fairly empathetic person. Even when I wasn’t working in the disability domain, I was reasonably conscious of the different needs of people. Not like I changed anything around me or was overly vociferous on such subjects, but at least I was ‘aware’.
And that’s what I want to talk about. Awareness.

NEW DELHI: To help students suffering from dyscalculia and other calculation-related disorders, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to allow children with special needs (CWSN) use a basic calculator starting from this year.
A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court has granted relief to persons with disabilities across the country by allowing reservation in promotion in all groups for those employed in public sector jobs.
The Bench led by Justice Rohinton F. Nariman confirmed that 3% reservation should be given to disabled persons both in direct recruitment and in promotions.

NEW DELHI: To enable persons with disability to easily cast their votes in the forthcoming Delhi elections, several measures, including sign language interpreters, postal ballots and pick and drop facilities, will be put in place.

This is only partly true. I’m good with the technology that allows me to be a writer, but I’m not so good at the mobility thing, which is where my sighted partner, Alabaster, comes in. I had work to do and didn’t want to waste time getting lost on the way to the dining hall, so I asked if I could bring him. They said yes.
