Social justice ministry ropes in pvt industries to extend reach of ''Accessible India Campaign''

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) The social justice and empowerment ministry (SJEM), tasked with implementing the ''Accessible India Campaign'' (AIC), has roped in private industries and is coordinating with them to extend the reach of the campaign, a senior official said on Friday.

Kerala's hope for 'Insight Project' for the visually impaired reignited with 'Kazcha'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kazhcha project has revived the hopes of Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) in reviving the Insight Project to train visually challenged to overcome the daily struggles. Despite being the lone centre for providing training to use smartphones and computers, it was forced to close shop after the social justice department stopped providing funds two years ago.

Consequently, several hundred visually challenged persons lost the opportunity to get training at the  Kunnukuzhy centre here.

Some important news for visually impaired students studying in CBSE schools. The CBSE Board has announced a series of moves to make mainstream education more accessible for them.

From 2020, students with visual impairments can use magnifying glasses and portable video magnifiers during their Class 10 exams.

For students at the Government School for the Visually Impaired in Thiruvananthapuram, Baby Girija is a leading light who endeavours to blot out the darkness of ignorance in their lives

High-school student Suraj Krishna cheerfully and meticulously spells out Braille codes for all the Malayalam characters he has learnt so far to his teacher Baby Girija. As he finishes his recital, the teacher gives him a warm pat on his back. “He joined us only three months ago. He’s a quick learner,” Baby says with a smile.

Visually impaired Odisha girl cracks state civil services exam in first attempt

Tapaswini Das lost her eyesight while she was studying in Std 2 in Bhubaneswar’s DAV School, secured 161st rank in the Odisha Civil Services examination 2018 conducted by Odisha Public Service Commission.

The negligence by doctors in a premeier hospital in the city during a operation in 2003 cost Tapaswini Das her eyesight, but it could not deter the 23-year-old girl to crack the Odisha civil services exam the results of which were announced on Monday.

With social inclusiveness and awareness amongst the masses with no biases for people belonging to different backgrounds or inabilities there has been more acceptance shown in the society towards the visually impaired.

TMC set to open school for visually impaired

Thane Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will bring visually impaired students studying in civic schools across the city in one centre and provide them with special teaching methods. There are 34 students who will be enrolled in a school at Kopri, Thane, in the new academic year in June.

“In the first year, we will only enroll students from civic schools. Gradually, we open it for admissions for other students. By then, students and teachers will get used to the new teaching methods,” said Manish Joshi, deputy municipal commissioner, TMC.

Dining blindfolded for a cause

To create awareness on the challenges faced by the visually challenged and to raise funds for a ‘talking library’, a fund-raising event was organised in Salem.

The unique part of the event was that the guests were asked to dine blindfolded. Dinner was served for them and they were blindfolded to have ‘dinner in the dark’.

EASTON — Jack Duffy-Protentis is less than a year away from graduating and starting a career as an engineer, a field that he enjoys because it allows him to work with his hands.

In addition to being a college student and learning concepts from chemistry and physics he has applied to his work, the Easton native has faced another challenge: being visually impaired.
