Kyocera Develops Smart Cane to Help Prevent Accidents at Train Stations

The prototype Smart White Cane developed by Kyocera makes use of wireless transmission technology.

Railway operators have been placing platform doors to prevent blind and visually impaired passengers from falling onto the tracks or colliding with moving trains. But not all stations can be fitted with these doors.

From experience I can say there are many people who do not know that they can volunteer to make the life of the visually challenged better,” says Barath S N, the founder of Chennai-based Lit the Light, a group formed four years ago to help visually impaired students across Tamil Nadu. The NGO is organising the year’s first ‘Read Fest’ in temple town to sensitise more people to reading and scribing for the visually challenged.

Maharashtra: Causes of visual impairment in children changing, says study

A statewide study conducted in schools for visually impaired has revealed that causes of childhood blindness are changing as society makes socio-economic progress. The study was conducted by a team from H V Desai Eye Hospital’s team, said Dr Sucheta Kulkarni, principal investigator.

The hospital will hold a meeting on February 18 to discuss the findings of the research, sources said. The findings are likely to influence government policies on eyecare funding for children, sources added.

To promote eye donation and bridge the huge gap between demand and supply of corneas, the Health Department is set to start eye collection centres in district hospitals soon.

Increasing the number of eye donations is crucial as corneal blindness can be treated only through transplantation from eye donations as there is no substitute for human tissue.

Hyderabad Mint to release visually impaired-friendly Rs. 20 coins soon

India Government Mint, Hyderabad (IGMH), is currently minting 2019 series visually challenged-friendly coins and will soon release Rs. 20 coins.

In a statement on Sunday, Jyoti Prakash Dash, chief general manager of IGMH said the mint rededicates itself on the foundation day to serve the nation with a wide range of products and services. He said since 2000, India stopped importing the coins from 10 foreign countries, including the UK and South Korea and, “now IGMH is in a position to export coins with latest security features.”

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has announced a new pilot  program that visually-impaired riders say has potential to change  lives.

 On Wednesday, MCTS announced that Milwaukee will become the third city  in the nation, behind New York and Boston, to have a transit system  that has partnered with the app ‘Aira.’

The app connects users with professionals using their smartphone  cameras, allowing those professionals to provide real-time assistance  to blind and visually-impaired riders.

The Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) today transferred the technology for the manufacture of ‘Divya Nayan’ a personal reader for the visually impaired, to the Central Electronics Limited (CEL), a government enterprise under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, for commercial production and marketing.
