Telling Numbers: Blindness and visual impairment in India, district by district

The report found that the prevalence of blindness is highest among those who are at least 80 years old (11.6%).

The National Blindness & Visual Impairment Survey India 2015-2019, released last week, looks at district-wise prevalence of blindness and visual impairment. The survey randomly identified 31 districts with a sample size of about 93,000, among whom 18,000 were less than 50 years of age.

ID cards, voter slips in Braille for blind

Chandigarh, October 15

Identity cards and photo voter slips had been printed in Braille for the convenience of visually impaired persons in the state, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anurag Agarwal.

Apart from this, many types of facilities are being provided to specially abled voters, including the provision of wheelchairs, ramps at polling stations and transport facilities.

Thiruvananthapuram: Pranjal Patil, India's first visually challenged woman IAS officer on Monday took charge as Sub-Collector of Thiruvananthapuram.

A warm reception was arranged to welcome her as she took over from former collector B Gopalakrishnan. She served as an assistant collector in Ernakulam for a year in 2018 before taking charge here.
