Making life better for poor, differently abled students: Vinyasa Trust

BENGALURU: Around 2.68 crore people in the country, or 2.21 per cent of the total Indian population of 121 crore, are differently-abled, as per the 2011 Census. Of these differently-abled people, 69 per cent stay in rural areas. Catering to their needs, the Vinyasa Trust for Differently Challenged Institute provides free education, accommodation and healthcare to economically disadvantaged students.

The Delhi High Court has cleared the path for a visually impaired student to pursue M.Phil programme in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) by quashing the institute’s decision to fail him in the second semester of M.A. (Persian) for not appearing in the repeat course exam.

Justice C. Hari Shankar not only granted relief to Ghalib Zeyad but also praised him for his “perseverance and hard work”.

Government to roll back tax on disability pension for forces

Disability pensions in the Indian armed forces will continue to be exempt from tax, Union defence minister Rajnath Singh has conveyed to senior government officials, effectively rolling back a recent order that brought the provision in the tax net.

At the same time, however, the minister has called on the three services – the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy -- to device a mechanism to reduce instances of misuse of the rules, according to people familiar with the developments who asked not to be named.

Punjab records 19% jump in eye donations

With the world gearing up to celebrate the World Organ Donation Day on Tuesday, Punjab has something to add to the cheer. The state’s health and family welfare department has recorded an increase of almost 19% in eye donations, data on its website shows.

The department collected over 1,517 corneas in 2018-19 (April 1 to March 31); in 2017-18, the number was 1,274, which was just 1.3% increase over the 2016-17 figure of 1,257. Ludhiana recorded the highest corneal donations at 382, followed by Amritsar (267) and Jalandhar (173).

Special Educators Forum-India demands separate national education policy for children with disabilities August 12, 2019

The Special Educators Forum-India has demanded a separate education policy for children and people with disabilities on the grounds that the new draft National Education Policy fails to address the needs of the community.

Slamming the draft National Education Policy (NEP) for failing to address the needs of children with disabilities, the Special Educators’ Form – India (SEFI) has asked the Centre to frame a separate policy for the community.

Plea to increase quota for persons with vision impairment

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) on Tuesday urged the Centre to increase reservation for visually impaired persons in government jobs and education to 2% within the 4% quota for persons with disabilities.

The current reservation of 1% for persons with vision impairment was not commensurate with the number of persons with such disability in the country and needs to enhanced. But even 1% reservation for persons with vision impairment is not being implemented properly, the federation officebearers said at a press conference here.
