Moscow: While around 80,000 people savoured every moment of a hugely entertaining World Cup semi-final between Croatia and England at Luzhniki stadium here on Wednesday, Robert Holjevac listened to the gripping match at the stands because the 50-year-old Croatian has been completely blind since he was 15 years old. But lack of vision didn't prevent him from visualising the crucial moments of the game, which his beloved country won to reach their first final.

When Manjushree, Nagesh and Sudha’s 8-year-old daughter, asked them for a bicycle, the couple was in a fix. Visually impaired and hailing from a poor background, the thought of telling their daughter that they would not be able to fulfil her wish was painful.

However, thanks to some Bengalureans who swung into action, Manjushree’s parents were able to make her little dream come true. On Wednesday morning, much to the little girl’s delight, she was presented with a bicycle – which she is persistently learning to master, her parents say.

Hyderabad: Tens and thousands of school children identified with various kinds of disabilities are left in the lurch in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh following non-appointment of special educators for the last four years. 

According to sources, there are 11,000 secondary schools for which both the States have been receiving funds under the Right to Education Act (RTE) from the Centre.

A selfless couple have adopted six blind children from around the world - including a baby girl who was dumped in a trash can.

Joe and Karen Bartling, both 60, of Oakton, Virginia, dreamed of having a large family but struggled to conceive naturally after having their biological son Joel, 30.

Following failed IVF they turned to adoption and heard about a baby that had been abandoned in South Korean orphanage through a customer at Karen's doll store.

Uttarakhand HC issues directions to state to look after disabled children

The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday issued a slew of directions to the state government to ensure that proper facilities are provided in schools to children with special needs.

A division bench of Justices Rajiv Sharma and Lokpal Singh passed the order after taking cognizance of a letter written by one Kamal Gupta four years ago highlighting the difficulties faced by children with special needs in pursuing education.

Making travel accessible to differently-abled

BENGALURU: In order to provide hassle-free travel to the differently-abled, a startup named, Enable Travel was launched in 2017. Based in Mumbai, it covers more than 85 destinations. In India, they have designed itineraries for places such as Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bombay, Goa, Bangalore, Mysuru and Coorg. All itineraries have been specially designed keeping the disabilities in mind. On an average, they receive 12-15 enquiries every month from Karnataka.

Better tech than braille for blind now

HYDERABAD: What if someone still uses Telegram as a primary tool for communicating with people even today? Isn’t that weird and outdated in this fast-paced world? Spending a huge amount only on improving Braille catalog in public libraries, printing Braille calendars, distributing Braille books of ancient scriptures are also as weird as the usage of telegram.

A new jiant step forward

I am extremely excited and at the same time nervous writing this mail.
Almost a decade ago we took our first step o audio describing the movie Black and prepared a special DVD of the movie that many of us enjoyed. We started with the vision that one day we will reach a stage where most of the movies released in Indian theatres  will provide us the option to listen to audio description through the headphone while we are sitting with our family and friends in the movie hall. 

India’s first dedicated Centre for Disability Studies opens in Mizoram

In a first for India, Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla last week inaugurated the Centre for Disability Studies at the Mizoram University in Aizawl. The Centre has been set up by the Department of Person with Disabilities, under the aegis of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
