UK petition urges Sajid Javid to grant visas to blind Indian musicians

Prem Bhagavan Nagaraju, 25, and Jyothi Kalaiselvi, 19, were scheduled to travel to the UK with a group of people from the disability organisation Devasitham Charitable Foundation based in Chennai.

Hundreds have signed an online petition addressed to UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid urging him to grant visitor visas to two blind musicians from India, who were due to perform in Scotland as part of a UK-India cultural exchange programme.

Visually-impaired musical band shows there is ‘Light After Dark’

Shillong: A troupe of visually impaired musicians is hitting the right notes in this hill state, with night club owners and event managers lining up to hire them, more so after the state election department recently engaged them for pre-poll campaigns.

'Light After Dark', a musical band of five performers in their 20s, has been receiving rave reviews for its shows, not just in Meghalaya, but elsewhere in the region too, Zoma Sailo, a music teacher and the group's mentor, told PTI.
 

Govt websites make magnifying moves for visually challenged

The Haryana Government is revamping its websites for visually challenged persons with the facility to magnify text up to 200 per cent, screen readers, text alternative of images and colour contrast for colour blind.

So far, 41 out of 61 state government websites have been equipped to support the visually challenged.

“It is part of Accessible India Campaign. Within days, all the remaining websites will be revamped,” said Neerja Sekhar, Principal Secretary, Social Justice and Empowerment, Haryana.

DU Admissions 2019: Disabled candidates in a fix over certificate for quota

Candidates seeking admission to Delhi University (DU) under the disability quota are in a fix as from this year the University will accept disability certificate only from certain notified government hospitals.

Last month, the Delhi government had, designated 27 government hospitals across 11 districts to issue disability certificates under the new central Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, for 21 conditions. These are the hospitals from where the candidates must get their certificate.

In Story of the Week, we look at the Discovering Hands programme in India under which visually impaired women are being trained to detect breast cancer lumps by touch. This year the programme is being expanded to Bengaluru and Kashmir.

Hasiba, 25 years old, had signed up for a computer training course at the National Association for the Blind Center of Blind Women and Disabilities in 2016 when she heard about the Discovering Handsprogramme that was soon to be launched.
