Chennai: Madras high court directed the authorities to allot a medical seat to a minor student with more than 40 % visual impairment. The court pointed out that the notification issued by the Medical Council of India dated February 4, 2019 making persons with visual impairment of low vision and blindness equivalent to or more than 40 per cent ineligible to join the medical course, would operate prospectively and it cannot be given effect to retrospectively.
Scientists have developed a smart suitcase that warns blind users of impending collisions and a smartphone app that can help people with visual disabilities to navigate airport terminals safely and independently.

BOW -- Delaney Spain-Kelly was diagnosed at 18 months with an inoperable brain tumor in her hypothalamus.
Despite multiple rounds of chemotherapy aimed at controlling the tumor's growth, the malignancy began to press against Delaney's optic cavity, leading to severe vision loss.
She has light perception in her right eye and a quarter of her field of vision in her left.
Delaney is 9 years old. Doctors have predicted she will lose her sight completely by the time she reaches adulthood.

On May 31, Amarjeet Singh Chawla, 63, will set off on a marathon from Mumbai to Pune, a distance of about 150 km. Chawla, who is visually impaired, will do so to raise awareness about the the issue of ‘avoidable blindness’.
Chawla will be part of the awareness marathon — ‘No More Avoidable Blindness’ — an initiative of the National institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) Vision Marathon. He has already participated in 174 races, 106 half marathons, 64 10-km runs and four ultra marathons.
