Vision To Achieve Dreams

Persons with vision impairment are as normal as those with eyesight. They have similar aspirations, abilities and desire to learn as any other person. The only thing that differentiates them from the ‘sighted’ is their lack of visual interaction with people, things and the overall environment. However there are other ways they can use to engage.  What they also lack is an accessible environment and encouraging attitude from people around them.

Denial of banking rights on grounds of disability

Banking is an essential part of every person’s life, be it able or disabled. It is so vital that even age is not considered for it. Working adults, homemakers and even students access bank accounts for their day-to-day financial needs. Like everyone else, visually impaired and blind people also require banking services like issuance of Cheque book, Debit and Credit card, Locker and Loan facilities etc. In spite of the guidelines issued by RBI and IBA (Indian Banking Association), banking services are very often denied to  persons with vision impairment.

Never back down

46 year old Dileep CR lives in Kurumassery, Kerala with his wife and daughter. Working as a construction labourer, he met with an accident on the site which adversely affected his eye sight. Following the mishap, Dileep found it increasingly difficult to continue his job due to low vision. Recently one of his eyes was enucleated and he has some vision in the other eye. Since then he has been looking for a source of employment so he can cater to the needs of his family.

From poorly trained teachers to lack of accessible reading materials, the exclusion faced children who are visually impaired is evident in multiple ways.

It also denies them the freedom of pursuing subjects of their choice, especially those that rely on the use of diagrams or images, like science, maths and geography.

In a bid to assist visually impaired people to easily determine denomination of currency notes, the Indian Institute of Technology at Ropar in Punjab has developed an Android App “Roshni”, using image processing and analytics.

The App was launched on Wednesday at the IIT Ropar. Assistant professor Puneet Goyal, said that ‘Roshni’ is the first Android App that works successfully with new currency notes that were released after demonetisation and it works well in broad range of light conditions and holding angles.

The panicky father of a 40 per cent visually impaired boy arrived in the national capital from Kaithal in Haryana Tuesday morning to meet disability rights activists. Unwilling to give out his name, the man said he fears his son, studying in Class 12, might not be able to take the medical entrance exam in absence of final guidelines from the Medical Council of India (MCI) for persons with disabilities.
