NGOS, people with disability discuss ways of inclusion

Mumbai: Diversity is a concept that is gaining ground the world over, but organisations need to look beyond it to inclusion, and even ‘smart inclusion’.

“Diversity is when we are invited to a party, inclusion is when we can dance, and smart inclusion is when we are part of the organising and curating committee,” Ketna Mehta, chairperson, Nina Foundation, said at a panel discussion to address the challenges faced by people with disability.

Going shopping makes Mike Adams feel “very disabled”. He says: “I can go into a shop and be made to feel invisible. There’s an apprehension. Staff are unsure of engaging with me so they swerve the conversation altogether.”

Tough times on the high street mean the big retail chains are crying out for customers, yet Adams – the founder of Purple, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes the spending power of the UK’s near 14 million disabled people – argues that shops are badly serving a £249bn market.

In order to make its students understand the meaning of disability, a city-based school, Spring Dale Senior School, is observing World Disability Week, which commenced from Monday. The School is observing the week under its 'Walking in their Shoes' initiative.

School students Class III to IX and Class XI will be stepping into the shoes of special children to bat for inclusive education during the week long celebration. Classes X and XII students will attend seminars and activities sensitising to disabilities.

Observed annually as The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), on December 3, an attempt for fostering inclusiveness of differenly-abled people Sahapedia is organising a series of multi-city events. 

It started with Kolkata on November 30 wherein West Bengal’s tradition of Beni Putul or glove puppetry demonstration was held. This was helmed by puppeteer Basanta Ghorai and was curated for people with hearing disabilities.

The simple things we do every day, such as watching TV, are often taken for granted. But for those who are blind or visually impaired, the act of navigating through TV menus and channels can, in fact, be no small task.  Even upon reaching the desired channel, finding something to watch that comes with audio description presents a whole fresh set of impediments to readily enjoying entertainment.

KANNUR: Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB), the  organization of the visually impaired people in the state,  has alleged that the Indian Railways is ignoring their needs  and this has led to serious issues in their train travel.

Doctors with Disabilities, a group that has been leading a sustained challenge against discriminatory practices in medicine, has sent a powerful response to the Medical Council of India (MCI) Board of Governors (BoG).

This is after the BoG’s public notice seeking suggestions on the MCI guidelines on admission of people with specified disabilities into the MBBS program.
