CHENNAI: In January 2017, when we met Vasanth Raghuvir, managing trustee of the Shakti Foundation ahead of their 27th annual fundraiser concert, she shared a positive observation with CE, “The ‘pity factor’ towards persons with disabilities (PwD) is slowly fading away. Another perceptible advancement is that a lot of young PwDs have got married to able-bodied persons. They share work, run households and also work. Acceptance is slowly growing in society. It’s not sympathy that they need but empathy.”

Vision To Achieve Dreams

Persons with vision impairment are as normal as those with eyesight. They have similar aspirations, abilities and desire to learn as any other person. The only thing that differentiates them from the ‘sighted’ is their lack of visual interaction with people, things and the overall environment. However there are other ways they can use to engage.  What they also lack is an accessible environment and encouraging attitude from people around them.

Denial of banking rights on grounds of disability

Banking is an essential part of every person’s life, be it able or disabled. It is so vital that even age is not considered for it. Working adults, homemakers and even students access bank accounts for their day-to-day financial needs. Like everyone else, visually impaired and blind people also require banking services like issuance of Cheque book, Debit and Credit card, Locker and Loan facilities etc. In spite of the guidelines issued by RBI and IBA (Indian Banking Association), banking services are very often denied to  persons with vision impairment.

TouchVision brings pictures alive for people with visual disabilities

Fri, 01/25/2019 - 12:58 -- geeta.nair

From poorly trained teachers to lack of accessible reading materials, the exclusion faced children who are visually impaired is evident in multiple ways.

It also denies them the freedom of pursuing subjects of their choice, especially those that rely on the use of diagrams or images, like science, maths and geography.

Something law student Maitreya Shah was acutely aware of right through his years in school.
