Twenty-three-year-old Mohammad Arif Khan was born in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh into a middle income family. At the age of three, Arif suffered from a fever which resulted in loss of vision. Two of his siblings also have low vision.
 
Due to the frequent visits to doctors and hospitals, Arif could never really focus on his education. His parents were keen on restoring his deteriorating eyesight. As a result, he could only study till Class 6 and then he dropped out of school.

Learning through audio, video & braille helped visually challenged to score high

Pune: Visually challenged girls of NFBM  Jagriti School for Blind Girls in Alandi Devachi have this  year too secured a 100% result in Std X SSC board  exams.
A total of 12 students appeared for the  board exam from the school.
Anjali Thakur, a 17-year-old   from Nawada in Bihar, topped with 78.2%.
She said a  combination of learning from Braille textbooks  audio, videos and online classes helped her  score well.

In a first, NIT starts computer course for visually impaired

SHILLONG, May 26: In a first-of-its-kind initiative conceived to cater particularly to the visually impaired, the NIT Meghalaya has started a computer training centre located at its temporary campus in Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah.
The institute has taken this initiative with the objective of enhancing the livelihood of the visually impaired individuals. As per official figures, there are around 2,300 visually impaired people in the state.

When Akhileshwari*, a person with visual impairment, visited a museum in Bangalore with her visually impaired friends, the authorities told them, "this museum is not accessible for people like you".

With her, her brother and mother also shifted to support her in the new city. However, the 20-year-old is now studying Political Science at one of the top SPPU-affiliated colleges instead.

Panaji: What this 15-year-old  accomplished is no mean feat for someone who is 100%  visually impaired. Saish Gauthankar not only took the  Goa Board’s Class X examination  without depending on a scribe to write out his answers  or him, but attained a score of 80%, reports Lisa Monteiro.
This makes Gauthankar the first student in the state to  clear the Goa Board’s Class X examination using a  computer and not opting for the traditional use of  a scribe.

15-year-old Vanshika says she wants to crack the UPSC Civil Services Examination and become an IAS officer.

Vanshika (15) who was born with a visual impairment scored 96% in the CBSE Class 10 results that were declared on Monday. A student of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26, Chandigarh, Vanshika says she wants to crack the UPSC Civil Service Examination and become an IAS officer.

She aspires to work towards the empowerment of visually impaired students and make a friendly environment for them. (Handout)
