19 year old Alvin Paulose is a resident of Ernakulam district in Kerala. Since birth Alvin suffers from a nerve disorder due to which his eyesight is deteriorating gradually. This impacted his education in a mainstream school where the modes of teaching were largely visual. Alvin had to rely on his teachers and friends to read out study material he had trouble seeing. In addition he used an audio recorder to keep notes from his classroom proceedings.
Rahul Kumar from Mussorie, Uttarakhand is 24 years old and was born visually impaired. He was born into a poor family, where his father works as a cook in the nearby convent school and mother stays as a home-maker. He also has two younger sisters who are also visually impaired. But being poor and unaware of living life with blindness, Rahul and his sisters were living within their available means. Rahul was put in the nearby mainstream government school where he studied in the midst of many challenges.
Shivkumar Patil is a resident of Solapur, Maharashtra and was born sighted into a poor family. At the age of 4 years he was affected by a retina related eye disease. Although his parents sought treatment at various hospitals for him, they had to endure with a complete vision loss. He was put in a nearby blind school in Solapur with a residential facility. He studied in the blind school till he completed his 10th standard.

Disabled, differently abled, specially abled – these are the words that Harry Boniface Prabhu, a quadriplegic wheelchair tennis champion for India, smiles at.
“True disability is in person’s mind. Once it is overcome, then there are no barriers for disabled people to find success,” is how Harry Boniface Prabhu explains it to Hindustan Times, adding, “I say to people, ‘God has blessed you with normal legs and I have legs which are round in shape with a metal plate’.”

I loved the trailer of the movie Zero. It’s a Shah Rukh Khan movie that also features Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Mr. Khan plays a dwarf. Ms. Sharma plays a woman with cerebral palsy using a wheelchair. But it doesn’t seem to be a movie about disability in the traditional Indian sense. More on that later.

In order to make its students understand the meaning of disability, a city-based school, Spring Dale Senior School, is observing World Disability Week, which commenced from Monday. The School is observing the week under its 'Walking in their Shoes' initiative.
School students Class III to IX and Class XI will be stepping into the shoes of special children to bat for inclusive education during the week long celebration. Classes X and XII students will attend seminars and activities sensitising to disabilities.

On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, visually impaired persons on Monday protested outside the Civil Secretariat here. They rued that the backlog of jobs reserved for blind persons was not being filled.
Agitating under the banner of Netraheen Kalyan Manch, Haryana, the visually impaired said they had come to the Secretariat to meet Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for their demands, but could not meet him as he was not in the Secretariat.
Observed annually as The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), on December 3, an attempt for fostering inclusiveness of differenly-abled people Sahapedia is organising a series of multi-city events.
It started with Kolkata on November 30 wherein West Bengal’s tradition of Beni Putul or glove puppetry demonstration was held. This was helmed by puppeteer Basanta Ghorai and was curated for people with hearing disabilities.

India is a nation that ranks second in the list of the worlds most densly populated countries out of which a part of this demographic consists of people with special needs. We have the highest population of visually impared people in the world. According to Disabled Population In India Census 2011, out of the 121 Cr population, 2.68 Cr persons are disabled which is 2.21% of the total population. Among the disabled population 56% (1.5 Cr) are males and 44% (1.18 Cr ) are females.
The simple things we do every day, such as watching TV, are often taken for granted. But for those who are blind or visually impaired, the act of navigating through TV menus and channels can, in fact, be no small task. Even upon reaching the desired channel, finding something to watch that comes with audio description presents a whole fresh set of impediments to readily enjoying entertainment.
