Researchers work on bringing art to visually impaired students

“ART IS MY favourite subject,” Nattinan Dankratok, a Mathayom-4 student at Kanlayanawat School in Khon Kaen province, said.

However, after she lost her eyesight, she has been spending her art classes learning braille, while here classmates get their hands dirty learning about art.

“Most visually impaired students cannot fully participate in art classes,” Onanong Ritruechai, art lecturer at Khon Kaen University (KKU), said.

'Involve US' - A stinging, eloquent response to discriminatory guidelines in MBBS admissions

Doctors with Disabilities, a group that has been leading a sustained challenge against discriminatory practices in medicine, has sent a powerful response to the Medical Council of India (MCI) Board of Governors (BoG).

This is after the BoG’s public notice seeking suggestions on the MCI guidelines on admission of people with specified disabilities into the MBBS program.

CHENNAI: Holding that when the law is so concerned for the persons with disabilities and makes certain provision/concession, it is the obligation of the law enforcing authorities to ensure implementation of the same in quite promptitude, the Madras High Court has said.  It set aside an order dated October 22, transferring a woman with disabilities to a far away school.

Scribe community to help visually challenged students

The Braille Resource Centre at Bangalore Central University (BCU) has formed a scribe community– a set of sighted volunteers who would lend a hand for the students to write their exams. Finding scribes, who take down answers dictated by the visually challenged students during exams, has been arduous for many students, who depend on friends and NGOs for a volunteer. There are instances when students had difficulties arranging a scribe even a day before their exams. “They’re badly in need of scribes.

BENGALURU: Equality is mere tokenism, feels Yetnebersh Nigussie, a lawyer and disability rights activist from Ethiopia, who was in the city for the recently-concluded India Inclusion Summit 2018. After all, she has faced a fair share of trials and tribulations after having lost her eye-sight at the age of five. “If you say everyone is equal, but you’re not treating others equally, then that’s the worst form of inequality,” says the lawyer, who has taken it upon herself to work at “taking equality beyond just a formality.”

Better eye care delivery: Phaco programme for ophthalmologists

Chennai: As per estimates, India has only around 15,000 ophthalmologists capable of performing eye surgeries in various specialties, with more than one crore of the population being visually impaired. Taking the huge need of ophthalmologists, Alcon eye care partnered with Aravind Eye Care Hospitals in the state under its Phaco development programme to train practising eye doctors and caregivers.
