Why Ashwini Angadi's Belaku is the school that every blind child wants to be at
Just because you can't see doesn't mean you lack vision. The perfect example of that is 27-year-old Ashwini Angadi who has been visually impaired from birth. A popular person, her biggest claim to fame is that she is a global youth ambassador from Karnataka who works for the empowerment of differently-abled children.
HC relief for visually-impaired student
The Bombay High Court recently granted relief to a visually impaired student by directing the State board to add 20 grace marks to her result as she was not aware about the disability column to be filled.
A Division Bench of Justices Naresh Patil and G.S. Kulkarni was hearing a plea by Shaikh Mehmoona Abdullah, a student with 75% low vision. She failed Class XII in February-March 2017 and again in her second attempt in July the same year. She moved court in June 27, seeking a direction from the court to issue a fresh marksheet for two subjects in the 2017 exam.
At Red Fort, a more inclusive Independence Day
For children from the National Institute of People with Intellectual Disabilities (NIPID), Independence Day was a long one. After all, they had to wake up at 2 am to make their way to the Red Fort. But the energy at the section demarcated for differently abled children was like that at a concert — with frenzied cheering and clapping at the sight of the Prime Minister and his speech — translated by four interpreters at the venue.

Travelling while disabled is hell. We need major change – and kindness Penny Anderson
Every day brings news of novel, cruel and unusual indignities inflicted on a human daring to travel while disabled. In the latest demoralising example, Steve Smithers was prevented from flying for the crime of carrying spanners, in case he used them to “dismantle the plane” instead of adjusting his wheelchair.
Diagnosing Bias
The Delhi High Court has ordered the formation of a committee of experts to examine if students with hearing impairment and dyslexia can pursue MBBS/BDS courses (IE, August 10). This order came after two cases of students with the said disabilities were denied admission to medical colleges. The court’s order has opened up a debate on two important aspects of the social attitude towards those with physical and mental disabilities: One, the actual inability of those who are physically challenged to perform a task.
