SIX visually impaired pupils from Murehwa High School in Mashonaland East are appealing for assistance to take part in the second edition of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSAB1 Football) women’s training camp and games in Japan.

A total of £3 000 is needed to register the girls for the tournament that will be held in Tokyo and Saitama, Japan, from February 20-25, 2019.

When he was six months old, this Pampore youth was hit by a mysterious disease, leading to complete blindness.

With grit he has, however, not only become self-sufficient but also the first-ever Kashmiri to make it to the Indian national cricket team for blind.

While talking to The Tribune at his home amid the saffron fields in Dussoo village of Pampore in Pulwama district, Irfan Ahmad Mir, 21, was all smiles while he narrated his feat.

NGO carries out mass wedding, helps them out with groceries

A Ghatkopar-based NGO helped nine visually impaired couples get married on Sunday. The annual pre-Diwali initiative by the Omkar Andh KEVK Society also saw the couples being helped with groceries and basic kitchen necessities to start off their married life.

“We have been carrying out mass weddings for couples with visual impairment for the past 10 years. The couples come from all over Maharashtra,” said committee member Ashok Deorepatil, who managed the event.

Engineering student alleges racket in disability certificate

BHOPAL: An engineering student, who is a civil service aspirant, claimed she carried out a series of "sting operations" against middlemen and doctors involved in issuing fake disability certificates. She also lodged an official complaint with the Lokayukta organisation seeking a case against those involved. 

Disabled persons cross police barricades to stage dharna

Hundreds of disabled persons took out a protest march in the city on Thursday and overpowered police barricades to stage a dharna outside CM’s camp office.

The protesters were demanding the implementation of Right for Disabled Law, 2016, pension and pass of train and bus facility for people with 40 per cent disability, Rs 5,000 monthly pension, an increase in the reservation quota for disabled in government jobs from 3 to 4 per cent and filling of all vacant posts in the quota in all departments.

Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) president GK Mahantesh on Wednesday said BCCI should recognise the federation and provide them with proper infrastructure and financial aid. “We have written to the BCCI several times and their response has been very positive till now. However, actions should follow the response. We need positive actions from the custodians of cricket in India,” Mahantesh told PTI.
