Shruti Kalra can never watch a film at the cinema without having to nudge the person next to her. “Every time there’s a silent scene, I need to ask them what’s going on,” says Kalra, a Delhi-based professor, who is blind. She only dares going to see a film with someone she knows won’t mind the disturbances.
The campus of the Helen Keller Memorial Association For The Blind is abuzz. The carpets on the floor and the shamiana lend it a festive mood. Students dressed in their best walk around and there is a barely contained excitement in the air. The reason for this? An audiobooks and Braille library that has just recently been launched.
Amid the controversy surrounding Dehradun-based National Institute of Visually Handicapped (NIVH), students who are protesting the alleged sexual harassment of a girl student by a music teacher, said on Wednesday that they will continue their protest till the director is terminated and a deadline is set to meet their demands.

Former Indian cricket skipper Bishan Singh Bedi today launched a vision screening campaign for underprivileged children in Delhi.
He distributed free spectacles to 27 children of Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Pandara Park, where 314 students were screened to identify any visual impairment or eye conditions and prevent avoidable blindness as a part of a joint initiative here.
“Vision is as much critical in children's education as it is in the playing fields. It is vital in childhood and in later life,” said Bedi.
