PM donates $1.52m to visually impaired cricketers

Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller on Tuesday presented a cheque valued at $1.52 million to the Jamaica Visually Impaired Cricket Association (JVICA) at Jamaica House.

The funds will go towards covering the cost for hosting the upcoming 7th regional visually impaired cricket tournament to be held July 18-24, the Office of the Prime Minister said.

Kolkata blind daredevils scale 16,000 feet

KOLKATA: Months before Chhanda Gayen attempted her double climb at Kanchenjungha, a team of mountaineers from the city quietly accomplished a daring feat that is no less stunning. Eleven blind climbers scaled 16,000 feet at the Yunam peak in Himachal Pradesh last September, arguably the tallest climb by a group of individuals with disability in India. While four of these climbers have partial vision, the rest are totally blind. The team plans to improve upon the feat by summiting the Nandaja peak in Garhwal later this year. 

CBSE results: Visually impaired twins, who've scored above 85 in other subjects, given zero in one

Two visually impaired girls studying in the national capital have been given zero marks in one subject in their CBSE examination. Ironically they had scored between 85 and 95 marks in all other subjects.

The CBSE has said that it is looking into the matter. This after questions are being raised as to whether the board went wrong.

Trolley Run draws visually impaired runners to support therapy and raise awareness

Aaron Scheidies wasn’t going after any records Sunday morning at the 26th annual Sabates Eye Centers Trolley Run. Scheidies had just come off the Boston Marathon and wanted to take it easy on his legs, even though the Trolley Run is just 4 miles long.

Blind cricket struggles for recognition in India

Despite recent successes, including winning the T20 World Cup, visually impaired players are not getting the backing that could turn them into professionals

London Marathon 2014: Ilford man running 30th marathon with visually-impaired Paralympian

For many people, one marathon is enough, but Harmander Singh is running his 30th consecutive London Marathon.

Harmander, 54, runs with Ilford group Sikhs in the City and trained the world’s oldest marathon runner, Fauja Singh, the 101, for the 2012 race.

This year he has worked with Louise Simpson, who was born blind and is raising money for visually-impaired children’s charity VICTA.

She competed in the London 2012 Paralympics, reaching the goalball quarter finals, and has set herself a new challenge.
