Social Justice Department to conduct art and sports meet for differently challenged

According to the department, the meet will be similar to that of the ‘Keralotsavam’ event organized jointly by the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board and Local Self Government Department.
 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Social Justice Department is planning to conduct a state-level art and sports meet in order to identify the hidden talents among the differently challenged community.

Indian blind footballers' training session with Thai players in Kochi concludes

KOCHI: The three-day football camp for the blind footballers of both Thailand and Indian players organised by Indian Blind Football Federation with the Thailand National Blind Football Team concluded on Wednesday.

The three-day camp which started on July 23 at Jogo Grounds, Chilavanoor, was part of an exchange of skills programme to develop the National Academy Team comprising Indian players to develop the side for the future.

25-year-old Bappi, a resident of Jharkhand lost his eyesight overnight at the age of 13 due to sudden retinal detachment. He underwent treatment at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai with the hope to recover his sight. After several treatments, his vision was restored but it only lasted only for 10 days. And once again he became visually impaired. His doctors motivated him to take part in training workshops which paved way for Bappi in joining the National Institute for Visually Handicapped, Chennai and Mitra Jyothi, Bangalore where he learnt how to use braille and computers.

As enshrined in the Constitution of India, the fundamental rights guarantee equal opportunities and facilities to every citizen of our country, irrespective of an individual’s background. As India is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), it is obliged to provide equal access and amenities to the visually impaired in all areas. However, people with disability are experiencing humiliation and discrimination at various stages in their day to day lives.

OPENING THE GATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Three brothers Shakir Malik, Shadab and Adil residing in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh are completely blind since birth. Born in an economically weaker family, their father works as a daily laborer and their mother does embroidery work on garments. As the parents had zilch knowledge about living life with blindness, all the siblings had a difficult time growing up. Shakir being the eldest suffered the most.

Assistive technology museum inaugurated.

AHMEDABAD: The walking cane with sensor, printer that can enhance the writing and images and scanner that can read a book — these are some of the innovations that are displayed at ‘Technology Museum’ unveiled at the Blind People’s Association (BPA).

Country's self teaching Braille device launched in Ranchi blind school

RANCHI: Now, learning braille will be self assisted for the  24 odd students at Rajyakrit Netrahin Madhya Vidyalaya in Harmu, Ranchi. The school students now have a chance at learning braille from Annie, the first braille self learning literacy device in the country developed by Bangalore based start-up, Thinkerbell Labs. 
A total of 20 Annie-s, complete with a digital braille slate, a braille keyboard and a display were officially launched in Ranchi on Tuesday.

St Mira's College for Girls in Pune to offer certificate course in disability

This is a welcome step! NGO EKansh Trust and St Mira's College for Girls in Pune have come together to start a certificate course in disability to create awareness and inclusion about people with disabilities.

This is a six-week course that will teach about different kinds of disabilities - physical, intellectual, mental, as well as learning. It will teach about the implications, early intervention, as well as the rights of disabled people. EKansh Trust plans to start such courses in other institutes as well.

Indian Braille Translator' software.

The software supports translation of Indian languages to Braille. It's main features are:

a) Compatible with Braille Embosser & Braille Display

The software is compatible with Index Braille Embossers. File translated can be sent for printing to an Index Embosser directly from the software.
 
The translated file can be saved in BRF format and then transferred to a Braille display for reading in Braille.

b) File formats

Supports opening of txt, doc, docx, rtf & brf formatted files.
The translated file can be saved in BRF format
