Walk in the Dark event event in Aizawl raises awareness about avoidable blindness

Over 300 visually impaired and blind children took part in the event Walk in the Darkorganised in Aizawl in Mizoram. Among those who were present were well-known people as well.

The walk was kicked off by Mizoram Government's Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Dr Lalnunthara. Professional footballers Jeje Lalpekhlua and Zohmingliana Ralte also joined in.

A life of true grit

It is challenging for a woman in India to surmount the social and cultural perils in this country and if you are disabled things get even worse.  The opportunities fade away and the doors shut on you harder. But Pavitra from Sindagi city in Karnataka proves that it could be different. She happens to be quite a fighter.

An issue of large import

The first job is always hard and being a visually impaired person, it was harder for Janardhan. After surmounting the obstacles of being born blind, ill-fitting at a mainstream school, and challenged at his first job, Janardhan from Ahmednagar, Pune was at ease till a few months before.

Berkeley, CA, USA: Actiview, a Bay Area based technology company, is collaborating with Pixar Animation Studios to provide support for all Blind/Low Vision and Hard of Hearing attendees of the new Disney•Pixar feature film “Incredibles 2,” opening in theaters nationwide June 15th. Moviegoers will be able to download Audio Description and Amplified Audio tracks to their mobile phone from the Actiview app, and play them alongside the film while they watch in the theater. Tracks are available to all audiences and compatible with any theater in the U.S.

Blind lawyer gets disabled clients into IAS

Despite clearing the prestigious Civil Services Examination, Sunder Lal and Abhishek Singh found a seemingly insurmountable barrier in their way.

The two men with disabilities had dreamt of joining the Indian Administrative Service. But the Centre's department of personnel and training (DoPT) put Lal, who has 70 per cent hearing impairment, in the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Central Excise), while Singh was assigned to the Indian Audit & Accounts Service.

Institute’s closure draws ire of visually impaired

Courses not conducted since August’

The regional centre of the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities in Karayanchavadi has remained closed for over six months. A student in the centre said the institute had not reopened after Puja holidays last year.

Courses were not conducted since August at the institute which was established in 1988.

The centre offered a few courses including Braille shorthand and a diploma course in executive secretaryship.
