India swaps 40-yr-old definition of blindness for WHO criteria: 40 lakh people will no longer be classified 'legally blind'

New Delhi: India has changed its over four-decade-old definition of blindness, bringing it in line with the WHO criteria, a step that would drastically bring down the number of people considered "blind" in the country.

According to the new definition, a person who is unable to count fingers from a distance of three metres would be considered "blind" as against the earlier stipulation of six metres, which was adopted in 1976.

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine whether a person suffering from disability of ‘low vision’, in which eyesight cannot be corrected or improved, can be allowed to pursue MBBS course and treat patients.

This contentious issue came up before a vacation bench of Justices U U Lalit and Deepak Gupta which wondered whether it would be feasible to allow a person with visual impairment to become a doctor and treat patients.

PUNE: In a couple of months, more than 20 actors, all of them visually impaired, will present Teen Paishacha Tamasha, a musical classic by noted Marathi writer and humourist Pu La Deshpande, with the help of recordings and Braille script.
Teen Paishacha Tamasha was Pu La’s take on The Threepenny Opera, a musical by German playwright Bertolt Brecht. It was originally a biting satire on the extreme inequality in Victorian England.

Ford car window helps blind passengers 'feel' the view

Ford is developing a new smart car window to let blind passengers experience the passing landscape.

A prototype, called Feel the View, uses high-contrast photos to reproduce scenery using LED lights.

Passengers can touch the display to feel different shades of grey vibrate at different intensities.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People said the charity "wholeheartedly supports" the company's effort.
