The Netraheen Vikas Manch, Jalandhar, held the fifth scholarship distribution ceremony for visually impaired students on Sunday.

The president of the manch Subhash Gupta and Sanjeev Kumari organised the ceremony in Jalandhar to honour visually impaired students. From across various districts of the state, as many as 100 students participated in the ceremony.

A mobile application to provide seamless access to loans for disabled entrepreneurs and individuals was launched on Sunday. The app, launched at the concluding event of the 22nd Divya Kala Mela, was developed by the National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation.

It aims to provide seamless access to loans for Divyang entrepreneurs and individuals, marking a significant step towards economic inclusion.

The Union social justice and empowerment ministry said in a statement that the Divya Kala Mela made record sales of more than Rs 13.5 crore.

J-K govt to raise specially-abled pension to Rs 3,000 from Rs 1,000: Minister Sakina Itoo

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to increase the pension for specially-abled persons to Rs 3,000 from Rs 1,000, Health and Social Welfare Minister Sakina Itoo said on Sunday. She said Rs 1,000 is a "meagre amount" and the planned increase would alleviate the financial burden on the families that are taking care of differently-abled members.

Even as Pakistan remains a formal signatory to various international conventions on human rights, the state has failed to integrate and fulfil the specific accessibility requirements of the blind community, which continues to live in the dark.

Muhammad Saleem, a visually impaired lecturer at a government institution in Lahore, felt that the government had failed to enforce international laws on the rights of persons with disabilities. "Neither are there any tactile tiles nor pelican crossings for blind persons in the city," said Saleem.

Appointment of visually-impaired candidate clearing civil services exam: Supreme Court issues notice to Centre over non-compliance of July 8 order

The Supreme Court came down heavily on the Union government over its failure to comply with the July 2024 orders of the Court, directing appointment of a visually-impaired person and other candidates with disability, who had cleared the civil services examination in 2008.

The Bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih issued a contempt of court notice to the Secretary of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), asking him to reply as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against the Department.
