Rajnath Singh visits visually-impaired BSF officer's home for lunch, lauds his service to the nation

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday to visit the BSF Academy in Tekanpur district. He was there to attend the passing out parade of the BSF assistant commandants graduating from the academy.

But in addition to his official engagements, the BJP leader took time out to pay a visit to visually impaired BSF officer Sandeep Mishra. Mishra, an assistant commandant of the Border Security Force Academy at Tekanpur, had lost his eyesight in a clash with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants in Assam's Tinsukia district in 2000.

Seva Bharati to take care of endosulfan victims

Seva Bharati, a non-government organisation working for special children and visually impaired in the city, will start running the two day care centres for endosulfan victims from April 1. The NGO takes them over from the Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Rural Development Project that ran the centres since their inception in 2011.

India to redefine blindness to meet WHO stipulation

A person unable to count fingers from a distance of 6m is categorised as “blind” in India, against the WHO’s stipulation of 3m.

The government is set to change a four-decade-old definition of blindness to bring it in line with the WHO criteria and ensure the Indian data on blindness meets the global estimates.

Innovation uses echolocation to detect obstacles

A high school student in Arunachal Pradesh has invented a unique pair of goggles that uses ultrasound and infrared sensors to help the visually impaired detect obstacles on their path. On Friday, the State government pledged financial support for him to develop the gadget.

Anang Tadar, a Class XI student of New Galaxy Academy, Nirjuli, was recently awarded the Dinanath Pandey Smart Idea Innovation Award for inventing a gadget called Goggle for Blind (G4B).

Asian chess championship for the blind begins

First rounds games to begin today

The International Braille Chess Association (IBCA) Asian Chess Championship for the Visually Challenged-2017 was inaugurated here on Wednesday. The first round games will begin on Thursday as teams from Yemen and the Philippines are to yet arrive, while teams from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are already here. The championship, hosted by Manipal University, is being organised by the All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) under the aegis of IBCA and All India Chess Federation.

WHITE GUIDE TO HELP VISUALLY IMPAIRED WALK WITH CONFIDENCE

For visually impaired people it is not easy to find out who and what is around them. A walking stick is the only support which can boost their morale and help them escape all the hurdles.

According to the WHO’s report, 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide in which 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision. 82 per cent people living with blindness are aged 50 and above.
