Device to help the blind move around, one step at a time

BENGALURU: Students from the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in Mysuru have developed a self-powered navigation system to aid the visually-impaired by generating the embedding transducers in their shoes.

Students A Anusha, S Ashwini, CB Divya and MH Kalpana, under the guidance of Shivaprasad N, assistant professor, Department of E and C, have developed the device. They have worked hard for six months to improve the quality of the gadget.

Komal (23) goes through an ordeal every day, changing two buses and an auto to get to her office near Lodhi Road from her residence in Burari. The two-hour commute brings her to the toughest part of her journey — crossing the road from across The Oberoi Hotel to get to the Blind Relief Association, where she works.

The visually impaired receptionist at the candle shop inside the association strives to be more independent every day, but crossing that road as speeding cars whiz past is a challenge.

Blind man not allowed river rafting alleges discrimination

Dehradun: A blind man has claimed that he was discriminated against after he was denied a chance to go river rafting. Shailendra Yadav, general secretary, North Zone Blind Cricket Association said that he has been visiting Uttarakhand for last few years for river rafting but was never refused because of his disability.

AJMER: Like any other judge, 31-year-old Brahmananda Sharma refers to the court proceedings several times over. However, like them, he does not read through the notes. The first visually impaired judge of Rajasthan, instead, listens to the recorded proceedings.
A civil judge and judicial magistrate of Sarwar town of Ajmer district, who lost his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of 22, Sharma always wanted to be a judge and did not once think of giving up his dream.

DCW helps visually impaired woman

She was allegedly raped on May 5 in Karol Bagh

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Thursday said that it had granted a compensation of ₹25,000 to a visually impaired woman (20) who was allegedly raped on May 5 in Karol Bagh.

“The woman belongs to the poorest section of the society. The Commission had called for an urgent meeting and has allotted an immediate compensation to her so that the family can ensure a proper door is installed in the jhuggi immediately. Also, the DCW has approached the court, seeking compensation for the woman,” DCW said in a statement.

India’s blind cricket body to launch IPL-type T20 league

2018 is turning out to be special for India’s blind cricket team. In January, they defeated Pakistan to clinch their second consecutive World Cup crown. And if all goes to plan, blind cricketers of India will have a T20 league of their own by the year end.

In a step that may provide blind cricket much-deserved attention from TV and fans, Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) plans to conduct a T20 League for blind cricketers on the lines of Indian Premier League (IPL), between mid-November and mid-December.
 

Ford aids blind people to 'see' with new smart window

Ford has developed a prototype smart car window using the 'Feel the View' technology that helps blind people visualize the passing landscape. The technology, created by Ford's Italian division in collaboration with tech-start-up Aedo utilizes vibrations to chart out the outdoor view for visually impaired passengers.
