A new 3D printed Braille Puzzle for the visually-impaired

HYDERABAD: LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, has developed Fittle, the world’s first 3D printed Braille Puzzle. Created in collaboration with Serviceplan and educational toy company Ravensburger to develop Fittle, the puzzle is for millions of visually impaired children across the world. Fittle models can be downloaded from the Fittle website and 3D-printed at almost zero cost, making Braille more accessible than ever.

ONE DAY WORKSHOP on Android Mobile Accessibility

The Assistive Technology Helpline of the National Association for the Blind Delhi is conducting ONE DAY WORKSHOP on ANDROID ACCESSIBILITY with the objective of enabling the visually impaired to take full advantage of the features of smart phones.

Winter Paralympics 2018's first gold medal claimed by visually impaired downhill skiier Henrieta Farkasova

Slovakia's Henrieta Farkasova won the first gold medal of the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics on Saturday in women's vision impaired downhill skiing.

Farkasova and her guide Natalia Subrtova finished in 1min, 29.72 sec, beating second-placed Millie Knight of Britain and her guide Brett Wild by 0.86 sec.
 

It was the Slovakian's sixth Paralympic gold in vision impaired skiing. Belgium's Eleonor took the bronze medal, finishing the course in 1min, 31.60 sec.

Mobile phone distributed to visually impaired students

MANGALBARE, ILAM — The Association of the People with Visual Impairment in Ilam has distributed Android mobile phone to the visually impaired students.

A total of 19 visually impaired students from Ilam, Panchthar and Taplejung districts have been provided the sets of mobile phone with the assistance from Action Disabled Rights and Development Nepal, said Association Chairman, Padam Subba.

The phone sets having special software friendly to such students is provided to help them in their study.

Visually challenged singers get ‘talent cards’ from the Thai government that allows them to perform on streets

Strumming his guitar with ease and backed by a drummer, Singhkum Boonriang belts out covers of Thai ballads as strangers pass by on a busy Bangkok afternoon.

But Singhkum is no ordinary busker — he’s one of the hundreds of visually challenged singers who perform across the Thai capital at traffic junctions, skytrain stops and other busy locations.

“It’s born out of my love to play music and sing,” he explains, sitting in front of a small donation box.

Funds crunch threatens to derail blind judo dreams

CHENNAI: Visually impaired judokas are in search of a black cat in the darkness! Ten of them have qualified for the world championship for blind to be held in Turkey from April 19. But due to shortage of funds and no government support, their participation is uncertain.

The 10 were selected on the basis of performance in the national judo championship for the blind, where Tamil Nadu clinched eight gold medals. For these judokas to take part in the event in the Turkish city of Antalya, expenses will come to approximately Rs 1.1 lakh per head, including travel and lodging.

BRAILLE BOOK ON MENSTRUAL HYGIENE RELEASED

Menstrual hygiene education is a basic right of every girl by virtue of her birth and, hence, all girls, irrespective of class, caste, economic condition and physical ability, should be taught on the issue.

Having this aim, a Braille book on menstrual hygiene was released here by Dr Birupakshya Dixit, India head of the Practical Action. He said this book would be distributed among 2,500 young girls in the State. He also suggested to the Government to replicate the initiative.
