This shows apathy of govt towards us: Visually impaired persons

Visually impaired persons who had organized a function to mark the World Braille Day turned emotional after invited officials skipped the event at SP College here. 

The event was organized by J&K Welfare Association for Blind, a group of visually impaired persons. The function was scheduled to start at 10:30 am, however, it was delayed as organizers waited for the officials who were invited to the function. 
 

However, as the officials did not turn up, many visually impaired persons turned emotional and burst into tears. 

World Braille Day: Who invented the reading and writing system and why?

Around 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide, with 39 million blind and millions more with low vision, as well as two million people living with sight loss in the UK alone.

According to National Braille Week, around 150 million people use braille – a code system of raised dots – as a form of literacy, as it allows users to spell, use punctuation and format text on a page.

To commemorate the World Braille Day, the students of Nethra Vidyalaya Junior & Degree colleges for Visually challenged students will be organising a walkathon on 04/01/2017. The students will be participating in the walkathon along with the lecturers, college staff, friends and well wishers.

The Nethra Vidyalaya Walkathon starts at 9am to commomorate World Braille Day and celebrate the divine message of HH Chinna Jeeyar Swamijis of how:

Kerala Federation of the Blind turns 50, Minister to launch financial assistance scheme for self-employment projects

As the Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) enters its 50th year, its members acknowledge that the plight of the visually impaired population in the State has improved immensely over the last few decades, although there is still a long way towards becoming a visually impaired-friendly society.

In 1967, when the federation was founded, the visually impaired were a neglected and stigmatised section of society, says Habeeb C., vice president, KFB.

School for visually impaired to start functioning in March in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jan 2 (UNI) A co-educational residential school for visually impaired children will start functional in the summer capital, Srinagar, from March 2017.
An official spokesperson here today said that Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan today convened a meeting to review the progress with regard to the establishment of the school at Parimpora in the city.
During the meeting, the Div Com said the Government had selected rented accommodation comprising 35 rooms at Parimpora for a school for visually impaired children.

UT to hold fashion show for differently abled on Jan 23

For the first time in the city, differently abled will get a chance to walk the ramp during a fashion show to be organised by the UT Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development. They will walk the ramp on January 23 in the event called Pride Fashion Show.
