16-year-old Mumbai student builds air hockey game for the visually impaired

Hemani Kalucha won the Indian Robot Olympiad 2012 for her project ‘AR-Jen’ The Robot Arjun. In the Mahabharata, Arjuna's story relates a great accomplishment in archery which, before Arjun, was achieved only by the Gods.  Robotics enthusiasts thrive on replicating such accomplishments to advance the field of robotics. This feat was accomplished by Hemani before heading to the World Robot Olympiad.

100 visually imparied to drive cars in rally on Feb 2

In an attempt to raise fund for the Institute for the Blind in Sector 26, Chandigarh, NGO Round Table India will organise a unique car rally-'Blind Man Rally' (BMR) - on February 2 from 9am onwards in the city.

Following instructions from navigators, 100 visually impaired people will drive cars in the second editition of BMR which will be flagged off from the institute and will also end there. 

The navigators will give instruction on the basis of Braille route map and the registration fee of the participant is Rs. 1,500.

Jade Etherington and Kelly Gallagher win World Cup medals

Visually-impaired skiers Jade Etherington and Kelly Gallagher added to Great Britain's medal tally in the slalom races at the IPC World Cup in Colorado.

Etherington and guide Caroline Powell missed out on gold by one-hundredth of a second.

The pair clocked one minute 30.22 seconds, just behind Russia's Alexandra Frantseva and her guide Pavel Zabotin.

Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans were third in 1:32.60.

Paralympics boosts profile of disabled but no panacea

Walking with Paralympic Gold Medalist Tim Prendergast along one of London's busiest streets, 'disability' is not the first word that springs to mind.

Weaving through the heaving crowds outside Baker Street underground train station, Prendergast, who is blind except for peripheral vision, crosses a road without pause - exhibiting the focused confidence that led him to victory in the T13 800m in Athens in 2004 with a time of 1:56.23.

Sai Krishna best in chess for visually impaired

Sixteen-year-old Sai Krishna with a score of 6/6 won the chess tournament for the blind organised by SDAT-TNSCA in celebrations of the World Championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday.

Chess for the blind is very popular in the state, thanks to the effort of TNSCA. Specialised braille-aided chess boards were used for the tournament which was a grand success with the 76 participants. The tournament was played in a six-round Swiss format.

Libby Daugherty strides on the goalball court as if she owns it. Wearing the blackout goggles that leave all players in complete darkness, the 15-year-old from Mesquite kneels to feel the string that lies under the taped boundaries so she can find her place.

Results of first National Para-Triathlon

The first National Paralympic Triathlon was held at Calcutta Sports Association yesterday, from 11 AM onwards. The event consisted of 750 m swimming, 20 Km cycling and 5 km running. Participants from 8 States (Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Tripura) could qualify to this National Championship. The event was organised by Civilian Welfare Foundation in association with Paschimbango Rajjo Pratibandhi Sammilani, Bengal Paralympic Swimming Association and Paralympic India Triathlon Association.
