19-year-old Rakesh Singh from Champawat, Uttarakhand is yet another visually impaired individual who was denied his right to education by unaware authorities. Visually impaired people being denied the opportunity to pursue education, to write exams, to avail scribe facility etc. is one area that still needs large-scale advocacy.
Abhijeet (name changed), a 27 year old visually impaired hailing from Barmer, Rajasthan contacted Eyeway in 2018. While his ‘past’ inspired Eyeway, his ‘present’ seemed in contradiction to it. He comes from a six-member family but with meager finances. His father and four other brothers lived by daily labor. His father and the eldest brother died few years before but the rest of the family continued doing daily labor for a living. He is the only one in the family who has gone to school though not regularly or at the traditional age.
Swati*, a 15-year-old visually challenged girl, runs her fingers over the shuffled dots of a Braille book, attempting to understand a sequence of dots. Every time she touches it, she tries to relate it with pictures or events she has heard about. "I was never taught Braille. I have been tutored only through audio lessons," said Swati, who touched a Braille book for the first time.
18-year-old Shreya (name changed) hails from a small town called Kalady in Ernakulam district, Kerala. They are a small family of four, struggling financially. They live by the fishing job of her father and the daily-wage labor of her mother. Shreya and her brother are visually impaired since birth. Shreya suffers from a condition called Nystagmus which is an involuntary movement of the eyes that causes loss of vision and depth perception.
Coimbatore: Scoring centum in Social Science, S Sabari Venkat, a 15-year-old visually-impaired student, has secured over 96% in the Class X examination.

BENGALURU: Students from the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in Mysuru have developed a self-powered navigation system to aid the visually-impaired by generating the embedding transducers in their shoes.
Students A Anusha, S Ashwini, CB Divya and MH Kalpana, under the guidance of Shivaprasad N, assistant professor, Department of E and C, have developed the device. They have worked hard for six months to improve the quality of the gadget.
