Gurgaon: Visually impaired lead the way in this unique car rally

Tue, 01/23/2018 - 11:43 -- geeta.nair

It was a car rally like no other, as visually impaired participants turned navigators and guided drivers with normal vision through rough terrain spanning 47 kilometres. The idea was to send out a message that disability is no bar to taking up any pursuit and breaking new grounds.

While the rally sought to raise general awareness on the importance of adhering to traffic rules, it also presented visually impaired people with an opportunity to overcome their disabilities and showcase their road navigating skills.

Mon, 01/22/2018 - 10:48 -- geeta.nair

Can blind people write programming codes?

The answer would be a firm yes as you watch them clustered around tables, putting their heads down and discussing what kind of apps to create in a 24-hour period at the hackathon held at the International Institute for Information Technology-Bangalore on Saturday.

The sighted people are not present to help them, but to partner with them in the effort.

Divyang’ replaces ‘viklang’ in Railways’ certificate to disabled

Mon, 01/22/2018 - 10:33 -- geeta.nair

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways has made formal changes in concession certificate issued to people with disabilities clearly listing out how they be addressed.

The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suggestion in 2015 that persons with disabilities be addressed as ‘divyangs’ (divine bodies) instead of ‘viklang’. Interestingly, it took the Railways almost two years to formally make the changes in travel concession forms issued to people with disabilities.

Mon, 01/22/2018 - 10:25 -- geeta.nair

SAN FRANCISCO: A blind Facebook employee is developing a technology that will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to verbalise the content of an image or video and enable the visually impaired to "see" and determine appropriate content for people and advertisers.

Facebook engineer Matt King is leading a project that is making solutions for visually impaired people on the platform that could eventually be used to identify images and videos that violate Facebook's terms of use or that advertisers want to avoid.

Alleviating parents’ fears

6 year old Akhilesh (name changed) was born with normal vision into a low-income family in Cochin, Kerala. A tumor was detected in his eyes, when Akhilesh was only 7-months old. He underwent an operation for the same but unfortunately it resulted in complete loss of vision. His parents couldn’t come to accept their son’s vision loss and hopelessly persisted in seeking medical help to restore his sight. Social stigma and lack of awareness pushed them towards a state of denial and unacceptance.

Addressing the gaps of implementation in government provisions

26 year old Ajay Sharma (name changed) was born as a sighted child to a farmer family in Solapur, Maharashtra. He has two elder brothers, one works as a telephone operator and the other repairs sewing machines. At the age of 4, Ajay was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa which led to a rapid vision loss, leaving him completely blind in a span of 6 months. His family turned hopeless from the time of Ajay’s diagnosis and showed no form of support in coping with his disability.

A case of lost identity

25 year old Gopal Kulkarni (name changed) was born blind in Rui Talav village in Maharashtra. He is the third of the four children born to his parents, remaining three sighted. Gopal’s parents were deeply disappointed at the birth of a blind child and so they wanted to have a fourth child to make up for their loss. Given their lack of education and weak economic status, Gopal’s parents were unaware of the potential of a blind person and had no will or resources to invest in him.

A Hopeful CES Trend: Tech for the Visually- and Hearing-Impaired

Fri, 01/19/2018 - 11:17 -- geeta.nair

One of the most impressive things I saw at this year's CES was the progress that's been made with technologies to assist people with visual or auditory impairments. As much as I love the display technologies or myriad smart home products, these assistive technology products have the potential to change people's lives in a very profound way.
