TRAI begins discussions on making ICT accessible for disabled

Telecom regulator TRAI began a dialogue on making ICT accessible for the disabled,
saying more policy interventions are needed in this area where benefits of technology have not been fully realised.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), releasing its latest consultation paper on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has also sought industry views on whether handset makers should be mandated to manufacture at least one model for the disabled with assistant technology features such as hearing, visual aids and emergency buttons.

Visually impaired Kannada prof receives doctorate from BU

Bengaluru: Disability is not a reason to give up on life, but a weapon one can use to prove that nothing is impossible. Nagashetty, 37, swears by this motto. Born blind in one eye and losing sight in the other when he was 15 years old, the gritty professor is probably the first visually impaired candidate to receive a doctorate from Bangalore University.

DDA demolishes hostel for blind, 20 students left in the cold, open

Occupants of a hostel for visually impaired students in Janakpuri’s Virender Nagar have been sleeping in the open for almost a week now, after the DDA demolished their hostel on December 15. The hostel, Louis Welfare Progressive Association of the Blind, has been running for the last 17 years. Around 20 people, mostly students of Delhi University or the nearby Sarvodaya school, stay there.

But the MP in question, Marsha de Cordova, couldn’t read it. This MP for Battersea in south London is registered blind and needs all documents in large print.

Stranded by immediate blindness, rejuvenated by confidence

Manmohan Sharma (name changed) is a 20-year-old from Jaipur. He is living with his parents and elder brother. His father works as a Chartered Accountant, his mother a housewife and his brother doing the final year of his Chartered Accountant studies. Manmohan has done his schooling from CBSE board. It was while doing his 11^th standard in school when he first encountered the vision condition which was later diagnosed as Retina Pigmentosa (RP). His eye condition eroded 75% of his vision.

Rehabilitation is paramount

When Yogendra Kumar (name changed) was pursuing his class 10th in 2012, he lost his eyesight due to corneal damage. This led to his studies being halted in the middle of class 10^th. He is a resident of Bihar but his father’s government job had taken them to West Bengal where he lived when he encountered vision loss. Yogendra had to spend around 5 years in treatment and looking for the information for studying further. He came to know about National Eyeway Helpdesk in June 2017 through one of his friends.

Bullied and cornered but afloat by resolve

Pradeep Rahane (name changed) is a 15 years old teenager living in Hingoli city of Maharashtra along with his parents and an elder sister. He is visually impaired since his childhood. He heard Eyeway promos on radio and instantly got in touch with National Eyeway Helpdesk in Mumbai in May 2017. He was looking for a blind school in Pune.

Economic empowerment is integral for independence

Anjali (name changed) is 28 years old and is a resident of Shillong. She is blind from birth. Her father passed away and her mother is working as a farmer. She came to know about Eyeway through one of our counselors. She completed her graduation in 2015 and underwent three months skill employment training in Enable India. After that, she did an internship in LemonTree Hotel but she was not absorbed as a full-time employee there. In 2017 she reached out to Eyeway seeking some opportunities to work.

Neither a man nor any disability, let alone cancer

Aditi (name changed) is a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. She is 30 years old, a graduate in Commerce and she got in touch with Eyeway in 2017. She was referred to Eyeway by one of her friends. She wanted to gain employment in order to be economically stable and independent.

Facebook's new face recognition service uses AI to help blind users know who is in the photos in their feeds

When Matt King first got on Facebook eight years ago, the blind engineer had to weigh whether it was worth spending an entire Saturday morning checking whether a friend of his was actually in his friend list. Such were the tools at the time for the visually impaired — almost nonexistent.
Today, thanks to text-to-audio software, it just takes a few seconds for him to accomplish the same task. And because of a new face recognition service the social network is rolling out Tuesday, he can now learn which friends are in photos, even those who haven’t been tagged by another user.

SC push to public access for disabled persons

The Supreme Court has come out with a series of directions to ensure that public infrastructure is accessible to differently-abled persons and ordered that the June 2019 deadline set by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 to make all government buildings providing public services made fully accessible to them be strictly adhered to.

Japan to donate Braille Printers for Blind Students

KATHMANU — Ambassador of Japan to Nepal Masashi Ogawa signed a grant contract to provide Braille printers and ancillary equipment to the Nepal Association for the Welfare of the Blind (NAWB) here today. The contract was signed between the Embassy of Japan and the Chairman of NAWB Kumar Thapa.

Pakistani student creates a device for the visually impaired

A Pakistani student from Peshawar has developed a device that helps people with visual impairment walk. The device, Sonic Eye, includes a white stick which has a navigation device attached along with a sensor that buzzes each time it detects an object in close proximity. The student behind the device, Hafsa Jamal, stated that she is also preparing a mobile app which would help the visually impaired navigate using their phone instead of a stick altogether.Late last year, students from Karachi University developed several applications for Android and websites.

World’s first ever IT park for the disabled soon to come up in Hyderabad

For the first time ever, a specially designated IT park is soon going to be established for persons with disability (PwD) in Hyderabad near the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad. Under a model of Public-Private Partnership, the government of Telangana has allocated 10 acres of land for this project. The announcement was made on December 3 on the account of International Day of Persons with Disability.

NEW DELHI: Apart from the Bing update and Cortanaenhancements, Microsoft also revamped is Seeing AI app for iOS. The company announced the changes at the ongoing Microsoft's AI Summit in San Francisco.

Divyang centre: Injured on duty, paramilitary soldiers take on new skill sets

Introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) last year in December, the Divyang Skill Development Centre (DSDC) has started giving training in gardening and mobile repairing to develop entrepreneurial skills among the physically handicapped soldiers.

The centre, anchored by the Border Security Force (BSF), was introduced to impart skills among paramilitary troopers who have suffered grievous physical injuries on duty rendering them physically disadvantaged.
