New Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) A visually-impaired computer programmer was barred from giving a test for a government-certified programmer when the state-run institute that was conducting it sent him back for not bringing a writer with him.

Originally from West Bengal, the 26-year-old Varun Mehato had gone to give his CCC exam conducted by National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), an entity under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has approved the payment of special bursary for visually impaired students of the state origin studying in tertiary institutions.

He gave the approval when the executive members of the state chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB), paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Benin City.

Dedicated to visually impaired children of Rashtriya Blind School, Delhi, 7th Haut Monde Mrs. India Worldwide 2017 was organised at Kingdom of Dreams in Gurugram over the weekend.

This year, Neha Deshpande of Pune bagged the title of Haut Monde Mrs. India Worldwide. Shweta Dagar and Shwati Nanda won the title of 1st runner up, while Karishma Chabariya was awarded the title of 2nd runner up by the jury. This international beauty pageant, an initiative by Shri Sai Entertainments Pvt Ltd, sees the participation of Indian contestants from world over.

Group wants government support for visually impaired citizens

The Federal Nigerian Society for the Blind has expressed displeasure over the inhumane treatment meted out to the visually impaired citizens in the country. Speaking at a press conference, ahead of its 12th annual White Cane day fitness walk, the group bemoaned government’s neglect towards the rights of the visually impaired citizens.

14,500 special children to get supportive aids

Those diagnosed with autism to be treated at six centres

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is planning to complete the distribution of supportive aids to 14,500 differently-abled schoolchildren in the district by August.

A.K. Abdul Hakkeem, district programme officer, SSA, said here on Sunday that hearing-impaired and visually-impaired children were given special attention this time. “They were broadly categorised into four groups – fully deaf and partially blind; partially deaf and fully blind; fully blind; and fully deaf,” he added.

Global blindness set to 'triple by 2050'

The number of blind people across the world is set to triple within the next four decades, researchers suggest.

Writing in Lancet Global Health, they predict cases will rise from 36 million to 115 million by 2050, if treatment is not improved by better funding.

A growing ageing population is behind the rising numbers.

Some of the highest rates of blindness and vision impairment are in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has decided to allocate Rs. 100 crore from the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) to the A.P. government towards skill development programmes. It has also agreed to consider setting up another branch of the National Institute of Mentally Handicapped (NIMH) at Amaravati, according to the Union Minister of State, Ramdas Athawale, on Monday.
