Four youths from Odisha are doing their bit to change the way visually-impaired students read. At a time when the state is facing acute shortage of Braille books, the classmates are on a mission to provide accessible education to every visually-challenged student through audio books.

Artist Chintamani Hasabnis has been painting since 1990. However, the last four years have been special to him as he started creating art that enabled the visually impaired to see. To do this, the 52-year-old artist made art that focussed on texture to produce a 3D-style effect, which could be touched and felt. “Art like theatre, cinema and painting is very visual. Conversing with art has its own benefits,” said Hasabnis, “It is a universal medium and should be open to all.”

28 visually impaired students shine in CBSE Class XII board

DEHRADUN: As many as 28 visually challenged students of Model School for the Visually Handicapped here attempted Class XII board exam this year, and for the first time, one of the students, Mohd ShahnawazAlam, scored an impressive 95℅ showing that his disability was not an impediment to academic success.Another blind student Ayushi Sharma from Jammu studying in Dehradun, scored 89.88℅.

Chavara International Institute for Visually challenged - Society for Rehabilitation of the Visually challenged, Kochi  will conduct Computer and Personality Development course for visually challenged pesons in the month of June.
This is a basic computer course for visually impaired persons with mobility and personality development also included. To qualify, candidates must have basic computer knowledge and pass the entrance test. Once the application is reviewed, candidates will be notified about the date of the written exam. 

Booklet on climate change now in braille

The Braille version of a booklet — Climate Action: We Must Not Delay — dedicated to environmental issues such as carbon footprint, groundwater scarcity and air pollution was recently launched in the capital. The booklet, which was launched by N S Kang, secretary and director general, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, is part of the Science Express Climate Action Special.

Education and giving exams is no easy task for the impaired. And, those setting the papers seem oblivious to the issues plaguing these students, especially those attempting higher education tests.

Questions where it is necessary to see a diagram, figure, bar graph or chart are a bane for these students, even if they have a writer explaining it to them. And, question papers never take this into account.

About 40 kids in the age group of 5 to 15 years participate in the annual L V Prasad Eye Institute’s (LVPEI) camp every year from in and around the adjacent cities.

They go back not just learning a few songs, dances and poems, making friends for life and also getting trained to face life’s obstacles. Since its inception in 2011, the summer camp has given a new lease of life to many. Specially organised for the differently-abled children, the camp has been bridging the gap between them and the outside world.

An undergraduate student at St. Francis College, Hyderabad, walked into the office of the principal at Devnar Foundation and said she wanted to teach blind children painting. He was nice enough to tell her to go ahead, and she held a very successful workshop. To ensure she could do it, she had practised with her eyes closed and using indents to create a touch-based outline. On the second day of the workshop, a participant came up to her and told her, with confidence, that he could draw a fish on a shoebox using just his tactile sense.

Scientists have developed a new, ground-breaking software that allows hearing- and visually-impaired people to enjoy television content in real time without any intermediaries.

The software, PervasiveSUB, compiles all the subtitles of television channels and sends them to a central server which forwards them to smartphones or tablets.
