For visually impaired people it is not easy to find out who and what is around them. A walking stick is the only support which can boost their morale and help them escape all the hurdles.

According to the WHO’s report, 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide in which 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision. 82 per cent people living with blindness are aged 50 and above.

Drishti’ brightens lives of 800 cataract patients

KOCHI: More than 800 patients got their vision back in 2016-17 after undergoing cataract surgery under Project Drishti, the flagship CSR initiative of Bharat Financial Inclusion Limited (BFIL).Project Drishti was implemented in association with Canada-based NGO OEU and Little Flower Hospital and Research Centre, Angamaly. “The organisers are planning to expand it to other districts by providing free cataract treatment to the poor,” stated an official release.

Nano-implant may help restore sight

Scientists have developed a new eye implant, using arrays of silicon nanowires that sense light and electrically stimulate the retina, which may help restore vision in millions of people worldwide.

The advance brings us a step closer to restoring the ability of neurons in the retina to respond to light.

The researchers from University of California San Diego and US-based startup Nanovision Biosciences showed response to light in a rat retina interfacing with a prototype of the device in vitro.

Government to introduce comprehensive package for blind schools

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has decided to introduce a comprehensive package for the functioning of blind schools - government and aided - in the state.

The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday took the decision to bring in a package for fixing norms for such schools.  

The package will deal with all aspects related to the functioning of blind schools in the state including setting standards, finalising its norms, ensuring infrastructure facilities, staff pattern and appointments. However,  there is no time set for implementing the package.

Estere Chunga Malula, 72, is an inspirer and a mentor of many. She challenges all obstacles to her success, proving humankind wrong on thinking that the visually impaired cannot execute household chores or engage in other manual work.

CSS qualified persons with disability can now join Foreign Service of Pakistan

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday struck down provisions of the Rules of Competitive Examination 2014 which barred the Central Superior Services (CSS) qualified persons with disability from joining the Foreign Service of Pakistan (FSP).

Releasing a detailed judgment in an already decided matter, Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Friday directed the federal government to allocate two seats to the two visually-impaired petitioners in the FSP at the earliest.

BENGALURU: With India home to the maximum number of visually impaired individuals in the world and Karnataka possessing a higher percentage of blind people than the national average, it is fitting that the second visually-impaired friendly railway station in the country now figures in the state. Mysuru attained this distinction on November 3, 2015.

On Tuesday various facilities to aid the blind were unveiled at the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna (Bengaluru City) railway station.
