Nonogenarian Bhakti Yadav, popularly known as “Doctor Dadi” from Indore, and captain of Indian cricket team of the blind Shekhar Naik are among the unsung heroes named for Padma Shri.

The focus this year, according to the officials in the Home Ministry, was recognising talent of unknown and unsung heroes of the country.

Many visually challenged cricketers pledged for organ donation by filling up donor forms or registered themselves as blood donors. The organ and blood donation camp was organised by the ROTTO PGIMER in collaboration with the Shri Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust, an NGO. The camp was organised on the sidelines of the National Cricket Tournament for the Blind being held by the Blind Cricket Association at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 2, Panchkula, today.

21-year-old partially-blind woman clears KPSC exam

Mamita Bai has passed the Second Division Assistant (SDA) exam of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) and is currently waiting for a posting.

That seems nothing extraordinary, but in the case of this 21-year-old, it is a feat. Mamita is 50 per cent blind and suffers from a condition that will eventually make her fully blind. Worse, she has received little support from her own parents because of her disability.

To enable people with disabilities (PWD) vote, the district administration has instructed its officials to offer assistance and required facilities to them on the election day. Addressing a meeting of electoral officers here on Thursday, ADC Sonali Giri said all polling booths would have wheel chairs and assistance for the PWD voters. She said volunteers from NGOs and NCC would also be deployed at several stations to help them cast vote.

Mimicry lights up her life

KANNUR: To her, it was darkness everywhere, but Shifna’s eyes were glittering as if they were celebrating her victory. Shifna Mariyam, a visually impaired Class X student of Government Model Girls High School, Pattom, who came through appeal, won second prize and ‘A’ grade in the mimicry competition.  Shifna went to contest in the district-level competition from hospital bed.
