Seeing beyond the white cane

West Australian researchers are developing a new gadget for blind people they hope will be the greatest innovation in the field since the white cane.

Once developed, the gadget would allow visually-impaired people to sense their entire indoor surroundings, "beyond the cane's tip," according to the Curtin University's Project leader Iain Murray.

This would be facilitated by special multi-sensor array technology to detect obstacles inside the room and then alert the user through an app, while providing directions to navigate it.

Poorvanchal gets first talking ATM

The district got its first talking ATM machine designed specially to facilitate its visually challenged customers. This is also the first talking ATM in Poorvanchal. The ATM machine, installed by the KashiGomtiSanyuktaGrameen Bank (KGSGB) at its Akatha branch was inaugurated by the managing director, Union Bank of India (UBI) LalitSinha. UBI, the first in the banking sector to give India's first talking ATM in Ahmedabad, Gujarat has provided the technological support to KGSGB in the installation of the machine.

Reading tool for the visually impaired launched in India

A device for people with visual impairments that scans documents such as newspapers and magazines and reads them aloud has been launched in India.
 
ClearView+ Speech, which was developed by Netherlands-based firm Optelec, will be marketed across the country by BarrierBreak Technologies, an Indian accessibility and assistive technology firm.

Music icon Stevie Wonder, last week lent his weight to a video appeal about a famine addressing more than 600 delegates gathered at a United Nations forum in North Africa. But it wasn’t the sort of famine that has all too often afflicted parts of the African continent. Instead Wonder, in his own words, “Let’s get this ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered (and) I’m Yours’,” was urging a UN forum in Marrakesh, Morocco to finalize a new global treaty to provide greater access to books for the blind, the visually impaired and other print disabled people.
