Electronic Voting Machines were demonstrated to blind persons at the Government School for the Blind near the bridge here on Friday.

Blind persons in large numbers came and took part in the demonstration and learnt how to vote.

Sexual abuse of children with disabilities is a serious issue world over. Girl children with disabilities are at risk of sexual abuse in the same ways as other children. However, they are at additional risk because of their disabilities and because of their lodging in special institutions, away from the watchful eyes of parents. On Monday, as many as 100 students from the Government Girls Higher Secondary School for the blind here were imparted special training on how to prevent sexual abuse.

Special arrangement for differently-abled voters at polling booths

Special arrangements have been made by Delhi Election Commission to provide better accessibility to the differently-abled voters at polling booths across the city, when the national capital goes to Lok Sabha polls on April 10.

The Commission has also decided to hold officials, who are in-charge of setting up polling stations, accountable for any inconvenience faced by such voters.

Govt declares holiday on April 10

Employees of government and private establishments, daily wage workers and contract workers will get a paid holiday on April 10, due to the Lok Sabha elections being held in the city, the Delhi government said on Monday.

“As per the provision of Section 135 B (i) of the Representation of People (RP) Act, every person employed in any business, trade, industrial undertaking or any other establishment and entitled to vote, shall be granted a holiday on April 10,” a government official said.

EC Ropes in Blind Cricket Team Captain to Woo Disabled Voters

lection Commission (EC) in Odisha, in its initiative to encourage physically handicapped people to vote in large numbers, has roped in national blind cricket team captain Md Jafar Iqbal as its 'icon'.

"The celebrity blind cricketer would encourage blind voters to exercise their franchise," an official at the Cuttack District Election Office said here, adding that special ballot papers had been prepared for this purpose.

The icon would also participate in workshops where he would interact with the blind voters who are not familiar with Braille, the official said.

Visually impaired student drowns in temple pond

A visually impaired student met a watery grave in a pond of Suvarnamukhi temple near Bannerghatta where he had gone for a bath on Wednesday.

The deceased S. Nagraj (21), a resident of Tiptur, was a second year pre-university student in a city-based college and was staying at a hostel for visually impaired students near Bannerghatta.Nagraj along with his friends went to the Suvarnamukhi temple to pray and later to bathe in the pond near the temple .
