Disability rights activists gift Braille script literature to JU

Jammu, Mar 6 (PTI) Disability rights activist Sandhya Dhar on Sunday gifted a Braille script literature to the University of Jammu for the dissemination of valuable information among the visually-impaired students of the varsity, an official said.

NGO Jiger’s president Sandhya Dhar gifted a Braille version as well as an enlarged font version of the Rights of Persons with Disability (RPwD) Act and allied literature to the varsity.

Blind officers in Karnataka struggle to read files as govt disregards key proposal

For visually challenged people who struggle for decades to get reservations in government jobs, inclusion at the workplace remains a far cry as the state government has neglected recommendations to provide OCR software.  
Deploying OCR software,  which would have enabled 1,300 visually challenged employees working at various government departments to function on a par with sighted peers, was a key recommendation made by a committee ten years ago.

College students now job-ready with skill training by NRCCD

NR Centre for Community Development (NRCCD), an initiative by NR Foundation, recently conducted employability skill training for the students of Maharani’s College here, a three-month tailoring training for women of Kurubarahalli engaged in plastic waste collection, and a 10-day paper bag making training for visually impaired youth. In total, 83 got the skill training with 63 for employability skills, 15 for tailoring courses and seven for paper bag making skills.

The link between poverty and blindness

Visual impairment and blindness are one of the most common challenges that developing countries face as they seek to eliminate poverty from their communities. That 90% of all blind people live in the world’s poorest countries is an indicator of the way that needless blindness inhibits social and economic improvement. A recent report published by the Unite For Sight Foundation is unequivocal in its conclusion: poverty exacerbates blindness and blindness exacerbates poverty.

TN Govt striving to provide access to higher education for all, says CM

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin gave away assistive devices and other equipment developed by students of the Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College to beneficiaries on Saturday at the college campus.
Among the innovative projects were a smart stick for the visually impaired which is fitted with a sensor to detect hurdles, a wheelchair with a canopy which will help users stay protected from rain and sun, and a software for the visually impaired to convert speech to text as well as a text to speech convertor for hearing-impaired persons.

MP forms its first visually impaired women’s cricket team

Madhya Pradesh has constituted its first visually impaired women’s cricket team which will play in the ‘National Cricket Tournament for The Blind’ to be held in Bengaluru from February 28.

In all, 15 teams from across India will participate in the tournament, but MP will be represented for the first time.
 

Four blind cricketers from AP got place in Indian team for Triangular series at UAE

VIJAYAWADA: The Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI)’s Indian squad for Triangular Series for the Blind 2022 has been announced. The series will be held with Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani teams. Four blind cricketers from AP have won places in the CABI team.
The CABI has picked a 17-member squad for the upcoming triangular T20 Series, which will be played in the UAE from March 13 to March 19. The Triangular Series will have a total of six League Matches and the Final will be played on March 19.

Punjab polls: Braille ballot papers, signange sheets for the visually-impaired

THE CHANDIGARH Institute for Blind has manufactured at least 27,250 ballot papers and signage sheets in Punjabi Braille that will be pasted on hundreds of EVM machines to facilitate visually impaired voters in Punjab to cast their franchise during the February 20 polls.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice of motion to the state of Punjab on the alleged non-implementation of the Punjab Divyangjan Sashaktikaran Yojana (PDSY).

The scheme was meant to empower around 6.5 lakh differently abled people in the state.

Jamia Millia Islamia organised an online workshop on Low Vision Impairment Awareness in order to celebrate the month of Low Vision Impairment Awareness.

Aone-day online workshop on low vision impairment awareness was organized by the Department of Education, Training and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) on February 5, 2022. The program was organised to increase awareness and sensitization about the issue. The month of February is celebrated internationally as the month of low vision awareness.
