HC: Give free help to visually impaired

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Wednesday  asked the Railways to provide free  human assistance to visually-impaired persons at  major stations.
A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice  Manmohan, which was hearing a petition initiated by the high  court on its own for making rail travel disabled friendly,  asked the Railways to consider providing the facility on its  own or through a CSR initiative.

Forty-year-old Muralidhar was born sighted into a low income family in a village near Solapur district of Maharashtra. Both his parents worked in a farm. While he was studying in a regular school, he met with a road accident in Class IV.
 
Due to lack of proper medical treatment in the village, Muralidhar lost his eyesight completely. For the next two years, he was confined to the interiors of his home, as there was no awareness about education or life with blindness.
 

Don’t charge visually-impaired student for stay at guest house: HC to JNU

The Delhi High Court has directed the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) authorities to let a visually-impaired student stay in its guest house for free till the disposal of the plea against his eviction from a hostel room.

The court on Monday also told the university to file within 10 days its response to the plea filed by Sanjeev Kumar Mishra against his eviction.

The High Court listed the matter for further hearing and disposal on February 12.

But despite the sight loss, he managed to study through mainstream school till Class XII, with the help of audio books and scribe to write his exams. Since he didn’t go to a special school for the blind, he lacked mobility skills and could not move around independently.

Twenty-three-year-old Gayatri Pagar lives in Nasik, Maharashtra. She and her husband, Rahul are both blind. While her husband has been working as an Officer with Canara Bank in Nasik, Gayatri had more recently applied for a job.
 
She studied till Class XII and applied for a vacancy under the Multi-Tasking Services. She cleared the Staff Selection Commission exam and was offered a job in the Income Tax department in Mumbai Zone.

According to the government, this scheme is designed not only to facilitate mobility and enhance the capabilities of PwBDs through aids and appliances but also to provide them access to livelihood opportunities, effectively eliminating physical barriers.
