NBA: Celtics make New Zealander boy's dream come true

A 12-year-old New Zealander boy with a degenerative eye disease has lived out one of his dreams thanks to NBA's Boston Celtics, his favorite team.

Louis Corbett made a visual "bucket list" of things he wanted to see before his sight deteriorates and the Celtics made part of that dream come true Wednesday with a pre-game meeting with players, courtside seats, a souvenir shopping spree and an on-court ceremony at which Corbett received a standing ovation.

Education volunteer thrashes visually impaired

A 13-year-old visually impaired student of a resource centre at Government Primary School, Surgapurai, Kotkapura, was admitted to a hospital after he was allegedly thrashed by an education volunteer.

Parminder Kumar, a student of Class-2, was allegedly beaten up by the volunteer on Tuesday and was admitted to the civil hospital at Kotpkapura on the same day. He is still under treatment in the hospital.

"The victim has several injury marks due to the alleged cane beating on his back, arms, legs and head," said the mother of the victim.

Two visually impaired students of Post-graduate Government College, Sector 11, suffered fractures when they were knocked down by the official car of the Chief Engineer of Punjab Irrigation department, Harvinder Singh, on Wednesday.

The two students were identified as Balraj and Ramandeep. Balraj suffered a fracture in the thigh while Ramandeep suffered multiple fractures in one leg and an arm. The accident took place on Madhya Marg in front of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee office in Sector 15.

Retired cricket great Sachin Tendulkar today said he was fascinated by the way visually-impaired play the game he dominated for close to two-and-a-half decades, adding that has learnt a few things from them.

"I inaugurated the blind cricket tournament about 14-15 years ago in Mumbai and I was fascinated by the way they play cricket, because you just hear and react to that. And you score runs and get wickets and you feel all those kinds of things. They are unbelievable and I was fascinated to see all that," Tendulkar said.

 A visually impaired chess champion, Charudatta Jadhav, is helping many others like him to master the game and checkmate the many challenges in life.

He may need a walking stick to help him find his way but he is a true master when it comes to the game of chess. Charudatta Jadhav lost his vision at the age of 13. The only reason that gave him courage to fight his disability at that tender age was his passion for the game. He soon became the blind superhero of Indian chess.
