Scores of visually-impaired people held a demonstration in the city today demanding a reconsideration of the proposed bill on the rights of persons with disabilities before it is introduced in Parliament. 

A delegation lead by SK Rungta, General Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind, also held talks with the Law Minister Kapil Sibal who assured that they would examine the issue and refer the proposed bill to the Attorney General. 

Experimental contact lens aims to offer tactile sight for the blind

Researchers from the Faculty of Engineering at Israel's Bar Ilan University have developed a prototype contact lens that could enable the visually impaired to see the world in a whole new light. Developed by Professor Zeev Zalevsky, the contact lens processes digital images and translates them into tactile sensations which can then be felt on the user's cornea, allowing them to form a picture of their physical surroundings.

Him Prasad develops new software for visually impaired

Semi-visually impaired Him Prasad Gautam has developed a fourth version of Dristibachak software for visually challenged people. 

At a programme organised in the Lake City today by Inclusive Empowerment Centre Nepal, an organisation working for visually disabled people, Computer Association Nepal (CAN) Kaski chapter General Secretary Achyut Khaniya made public the latest version of the software.

100 visually imparied to drive cars in rally on Feb 2

In an attempt to raise fund for the Institute for the Blind in Sector 26, Chandigarh, NGO Round Table India will organise a unique car rally-'Blind Man Rally' (BMR) - on February 2 from 9am onwards in the city.

Following instructions from navigators, 100 visually impaired people will drive cars in the second editition of BMR which will be flagged off from the institute and will also end there. 

The navigators will give instruction on the basis of Braille route map and the registration fee of the participant is Rs. 1,500.

Tactile tricolour for visually impaired

Shortly before India celebrates Republic Day, a group of citizens launched an "accessible" version of the national flag for visually handicapped. It is designed in three different textures, one for each colour, and each panel feels unique to the touch. A copper panel on the side has the words saffron, white and green embossed in Braille.

Chaos prevails at assessment camp for disabled people

Confusion and chaos prevailed at the comprehensive assessment camp for persons with disabilities of various categories like locomotor and speech and hearing impaired and visually impaired at District Government Wenlock Hospital here on Friday.

The camp was organised by Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped, Southern Regional Centre, Red Cross and Dakshina Kannada District Administration.
