Maheshwari youth activists bat for the visually impaired

They are all activists of the youth wing of a trading community and involved in social work of one or the other type. This year they have decided to adopt four blind students from the funds remaining after organising a limited overs cricket tournament within the Maheshwari community.

Cricket brings the community together and ket also can bury the hatchets between India and Pakistan. 

Jade Etherington and Kelly Gallagher win World Cup medals

Visually-impaired skiers Jade Etherington and Kelly Gallagher added to Great Britain's medal tally in the slalom races at the IPC World Cup in Colorado.

Etherington and guide Caroline Powell missed out on gold by one-hundredth of a second.

The pair clocked one minute 30.22 seconds, just behind Russia's Alexandra Frantseva and her guide Pavel Zabotin.

Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans were third in 1:32.60.

A banking aspirant was made to run from pillar to post by a nationalised  bank before finally denying him the opportunity to appear for an interview for the post of a probationary officer.

The candidate, a visually-impaired student, had competed with lakhs of other students to clear the written examination. However, he was denied an interview by the bank’s interview board saying he was not a graduate on July 1, 2013, a pre-condition to appear for the interview.

Solicitor Toby Stroh and former barrister Jonathan Wyatt are among the patients who took part in a gene therapy trial that has helped to save them from blindness
 
Thousands of people suffering from common forms of blindness could have their sight restored under a pioneering new treatment.
 
Researchers at Oxford University have discovered that by replacing a missing gene into the retina they can prevent cells from degenerating. The aim is to treat a progressive blindness called choroideremia.

Is study material available in Marathi or Hindi? No, said 75% students of the Mumbai University in a survey conducted by students. This was one of the many issues raised by econometrics professor Neeraj Hatekar in his infamous press conference that cost him his job.

Many among the visually-challenged added there was no study material available for them. Among other matters raised by Hatekar, the first year students said only one remedial lecture was conducted for them in the entire year.

Interactive ebook to inspire visually-impaired children to reach for the stars

The book, titled 'Reach for the Stars: Touch, Look, Listen, Learn,' is inspired by a latest Hubble Space Telescope image of the colourful '30 Doradus Nebula' - a giant star-forming region.

"We want to convince children that science is cool, is fun and that anybody could be a scientist, if they want to," said astronomer Elena Sabbi of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland and the inspiration behind this project.
