Aid available but out of reach for visually impaired

For the first time, Navraj Dhakal, a visually impaired person, touched Braille cells that allow visually impaired people to read by feeling the raised dots at a stall operated by Bright Star Society, an organization that works for the blind, at CAN Info-Tech 2014.

After Dhakal learned about its benefits, he decided to buy the device. But when he heard the price--Rs 260,000--he realized that it was beyond his means. But he was more disappointed to know that Braille cells are not available in Nepal.

New app launched for dyslexic and visually impaired rail users

A NEW application has been developed to help dyslexic and visually impaired train passengers.

Southern and Gatwick Express have launched the app on their websites – www.southernrailway.com and www.gatwickexpress.com – which is designed to help users access content with much more ease.

The system, called Recite, allows those with visual impairment and/or dyslexia to customise the site the way they need it to work for them.

5k walk in support of visually impaired community

Minugurulu, a movie under the banner of Respect Creations would be organising a 5k walk, ‘Seeing beyond sight’, in support of the visually impaired community. Addressing the media on Thursday, Ayodhya Kumar Krishnamsetty, director of Minugurulu said, “There is not much awareness about the problems faced by the visually impaired community. They can see more than what we can see. We do not need eyes to visualise things. After working with visually impaired in my film, I have realised that it is easier to work with visually impaired rather than the abled ones. ”
 

Differently abled children's meet

A group of citizens, NGO Prayas Sanstha and a city mall have jointly organised a motivational programme 'Sevankur Little Champs' on January 12, in the city in which differently abled kids will share their stories with others.
 
During the programme, Avinash Saoji of Prayas Group, which connects different like-minded individuals and organisations to promote social change, will interact with the children.
 

Google Glass 'rivals' ruled CES in 2014

While many of the digital glitterati thronging this week's Consumer Electronics Show were wearing Google's new internet glasses, rival online eyewear products abounded among the trade stands.
 
US-based Vuzix showed off what it billed as the first commercially available "smartglasses," an Android-powered monocle-style device with a high-resolution camera.
 
It can be connected to smartphones or wireless internet hotspots and display internet date directly in front of a user's eye.
 

Blind Books

A project has been carried out in Maharashtra of donating 12000 Braille books to 50 schools scattered all over the State by the Society in general. These are actually 110 books with 110 copies each. The difference about these books is, all the books are done by volunteers who do not know Braille. These people have worked from their Home, on their own Computers, in their free time, without expecting any returns in any form what so ever.

Vidya Vrikshah

Vidya Vrikshah brings computer-based education and skills, in all Indian languages, free of cost, to the visually impaired. The software package has been designed and developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Chennai, and has the facility whereby keyboard controls are provided to help visually impaired users to navigate the screen for entering or editing text that is already entered. Normal printouts for use by the sighted and Braille outputs for use by the visually impaired are possible in any Indian language or in English Braille.
