100 visually imparied to drive cars in rally on Feb 2

In an attempt to raise fund for the Institute for the Blind in Sector 26, Chandigarh, NGO Round Table India will organise a unique car rally-'Blind Man Rally' (BMR) - on February 2 from 9am onwards in the city.

Following instructions from navigators, 100 visually impaired people will drive cars in the second editition of BMR which will be flagged off from the institute and will also end there. 

The navigators will give instruction on the basis of Braille route map and the registration fee of the participant is Rs. 1,500.

Tactile tricolour for visually impaired

Shortly before India celebrates Republic Day, a group of citizens launched an "accessible" version of the national flag for visually handicapped. It is designed in three different textures, one for each colour, and each panel feels unique to the touch. A copper panel on the side has the words saffron, white and green embossed in Braille.

Chaos prevails at assessment camp for disabled people

Confusion and chaos prevailed at the comprehensive assessment camp for persons with disabilities of various categories like locomotor and speech and hearing impaired and visually impaired at District Government Wenlock Hospital here on Friday.

The camp was organised by Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped, Southern Regional Centre, Red Cross and Dakshina Kannada District Administration.

The village where half the people are at risk of blindness

In the village school of Kuyu, in the heartland of Ethiopia's Oromia region, more than 20 children put up their hands when asked if anyone in their family has eye problems.

"My mother has lost vision in one eye and the other is causing her big problems," says one boy. "She can't see where she's going."

Another child says her grandmother is blind in both eyes and is forever pulling out her eyelashes. "She rubs and rubs them," explains the nine-year-old girl. "They give her terrible pain."

Equa –Thon 2014

Equa-thon is a unique run, where people with and without disabilities will run alongside each other to call for the end of inequality and difference.
Supported by UK AID, we hope this initiative becomes the cornerstone for an even more robust, rights based campaign on disability in India. With the Disability Bill slated to be passed in the upcoming parliamentary session, we hope that Equa-thon will add value and spirit to the call for inclusion and 
equality.

New hostel for disabled students

A hostel has been opened for disabled students who wish to pursue higher studies, on Kumthekar Road in Sadashiv Peth.

Special care has been taken to ensure the hostel, Chaitanya Vishwa, is accessible through ramps. Besides, attention has been paid while designing the washrooms so they are completely accessible, said Rahul Deshmukh, president of the National Association for the Welfare of Physically Challenged.
