National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Dehradun is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. This institute is an apex body which has been established for human resource development, research and development, and designing delivery of model rehabilitation services, extension and out reach services. It is also engaged in production of braille / audio books and assistive devices for the visually impaired .

All thanks to the Madras High Court’s direction to UGC for providing Braille question papers to candidates who are visually impaired, Miranda Tomkinson, an aspiring college lecturer, and those of his ilk came one step closer towards the dream of becoming a lecturer by appearing for the National Eligibility test (NET) conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Sunday.

Electronic cane to support visually challenged

The cane developed by the VACSS is easy to use and costs a maximum of Rs. 2,500

In a smart world man has a number of gadgets to make his work and life comfortable and communicate faster. But for the visually challenged poor, it is still a cane that helps him/her find way. With increasing population and traffic and spaces becoming more crowded, its use is becoming difficult.

To help overcome the handicap, the Vision Aid Charitable Services Society (VACSS) here has come out with an electronic cane.

The National Association for the Blind, Sabarkantha district branch was established in 1985 with the aim of providing specialized services for the welfare of the blind. • It is involved in implementing Integrated Education Programmes in the rural areas of Sabarkantha district. Blind children attend regular schools as day scholars and live with their parents. • It also runs a hostel for blind girls and besides academics; the girls are given training in house keeping and daily living skills.
